ANALYSIS
Minnesota moved on from Whalen after he posted an 8.59 ERA and 1.82 WHIP in 10 outings (four starts) with Triple-A St. Paul upon signing a minor-league contract with the organization in May. The 27-year-old right-hander previously saw big-league action in 2016 through 2018, but he's a long ways away from making his next MLB appearance.

2017 Fantasy Outlook
Drafted in the 12th round of the 2012 draft, Whalen spent the first four years of his career with the Mets' Rookie and Single-A affiliates before being traded to the Braves in 2015. He features a fastball that sits in the low 90s and a hard-moving slider that generates a fair amount of groundballs. He spent the first four months of 2016 between Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett where he posted a combined 2.40 ERA, 1,19 WHIP and 112:44 K:BB over 21 starts. He joined the Braves' starting rotation in August and made five starts before being shut down with a shoulder injury. In his five starts, the rookie posted a 6.57 ERA and 25:12 K:BB over 24.2 innings. He was likely due for some positive regression, as he held a low 51 percent strand rate. Traded to Seattle for first-round pick Alex Jackson in November, Whalen has a chance to make the major league roster as a bullpen arm or emergency starter in 2017.
