ANALYSIS
Diplan was cut loose after Triple-A Norfolk needed to make room on its pitching staff for left-handed prospect Kevin Smith, who was promoted from Double-A Bowie earlier this month. Before being cast off Baltimore's 40-man roster in July, Diplan made five appearances out of the big-league bullpen this season and gave up one earned run over 5.2 innings.

At just 19 years old, Diplan handled the Midwest League like an expert. He struck out 89 batters in just 70 innings en route to posting a 1.80 ERA and earning a quick promotion to High-A Brevard County. There, his inexperience and his difficulty with control were exposed. Diplan managed just a 4.98 ERA after his promotion, thanks in large part to a poor 3.7 BB/9 and 39 percent groundball rate. Considering Diplan was more than four years younger than his average opponent at Brevard County, it's no surprise he endured some struggles. If he can improve his command and the quality of his offspeed pitches, Diplan could shoot through the minor leagues.

Diplan showed some electric stuff in his first professional season. His ERA and WHIP were rather pedestrian at 3.75 and 1.36, respectively, but he did manage to strikeout 54 batters in 50.1 innings. That solid season becomes even more impressive considering Diplan did all of that despite being just 18 years old. He appeared in seven games as a starter and six as a reliever, but that was simply for innings management, as he will continue to be developed as a starter for now. If Diplan can keep the strikeouts coming and lower his .330 BABIP from 2015, he should begin to be a trendy name on prospect rankings. Look for the hard-throwing righty to be aggressively assigned to Low-A Wisconsin at some point during his age-19 season.
