Osich jumped to the American League last season after a largely disappointing four-year run in San Francisco. The move paid some dividends for the southpaw, as he registered his best FIP (4.95) since his rookie campaign. That number isn't impressive, of course, but there were some positives to be drawn, most notably a walk rate (5.5%) that more than halved his best mark over the previous three seasons. Osich also upped his strikeout rate to 22.4% -- his top mark since 2015 -- while tossing the most innings of his career (67.2). Nonetheless, he remains a below-average major-league pitcher who is used primarily in low-leverage situations, doesn't whiff many batters and surrenders gobs of home runs (his 2.0 HR/9 ranked sixth-worst among pitchers who threw at least 50 innings). Osich's improvement is nice to note, but nothing in his profile suggests that he should be part of any fantasy roster.
Osich's sophomore campaign was not as successful as his debut in 2015, when he sported a 2.20 ERA. He finished last season with a 4.71 ERA, 1.32 K/BB and a horrendous 1.73 HR/9 in 36.1 innings. In his defense, manager Bruce Bochy was forced to use Osich as a traditional lefty reliever because Javier Lopez already occupied the left-handed specialist role on the team. With Lopez no longer under contract, the role of LOOGY may end up going to Osich, who had noticeable righty-lefty splits last season (.154 BAA and 0.81 HR/9 against lefties compared to .317 BAA and 3.19 HR/9 against righties).
Osich was called up in the second half of the season to provide some left-handed relief to the bullpen. He came through with flying colors, posting a 2.20 ERA to go along with an 8.5 K/9 and a 2.5 BB/9. The 27-year-old Osich throws gas from the left side of the rubber, but he doesn't offer any off-speed pitches other than his changeup, a vulnerability which could get him into trouble at the major league level. He spent a good portion of his time in the majors filling in for Jeremy Affeldt, who ended up retiring this offseason. Given his recent success in the role, Osich figures to replace Affeldt as a middle-to-late inning lefty reliever.
