Reaches minors deal with Miami

Guerrero agreed to a minor-league contract with the Marlins, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
Guerrero reached the big leagues for the first time in his career last September, appearing in 14 games for the Reds and recording three hits in 18 at-bats. After being non-tendered by Cincinnati after the season, Guerrero will move on to his fourth organization in Miami. Given the lack of established outfield talent on the Marlins' 40-man roster, it wouldn't be surprising if Guerrero eventually earned a promotion back to the majors if he fares well at Triple-A New Orleans.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

A raw but talented 22-year-old, Guerrero got his first taste of the Triple-A level in 2016. Predictably, he continued to swing and miss a lot, posting a 22.7 percent strikeout rate at Triple-A after striking out 22.2 percent of the time at Double-A. Like his uncle, former MLB star Vladimir Guerrero, he has a long swing and a penchant for expanding the strike zone. But the elder Guerrero was still able to find a lot of success with such an approach, while Gabriel is still very much a work in progress. Across both levels in 2016, he posted a .234/.281/.383 slash line, and he smacked nine home runs to go along with six steals. The Diamondbacks decided to bump him from the 40-man roster this offseason, and he ended up signing with the Reds on a minor league deal. Guerrero still has the physical tools to turn into an intriguing fantasy option, but with a 40-grade hit tool, it is unlikely he ever actualizes those skills in games against big league pitching.
Guerrero has raw tools, but he showed last year for the first time the ability to hit for both average and power that scouts had predicted. Of course, it came at High-A High Desert, one of the most hitter-friendly environments in baseball. A truer test will come this year at Double-A Jackson. If Guerrero can find similar success at Jackson, then look out, as his ceiling his already very high. The nephew of Vladimir Guerrero, Gabriel is aggressive at the plate like his uncle and also has a long swing. Predictably, that led to few walks and many strikeouts last year at High-A. This is an important year for Guerrero to back up what he accomplished last year and to perhaps improve his plate discipline a bit, but he just turned 21 in December and time is on his side.
The nephew of Vladimir Guerrero, Gabriel has a similar approach at the plate – a long swing, above-average power and a willingness to expand the zone. The latter likely will lead to low walk totals and high strikeout counts, but he makes up for it with raw power. Although he totaled 30 extra-base hits at Low-A Clinton last season, just four went over the fence. That should come in time, however, as the 20-year-old's ceiling is very high. A strong arm and good speed round out his impressive tools. Guerrero is a long way off, but he's someone to keep track of.
