RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2018

There was no outlook written for Micah Johnson.

2017

Johnson spent most of 2016 in Oklahoma City after coming over in a trade from the White Sox and did little to show he deserves regular playing time in the majors. He hit a middling .261/.321/.356 in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League and, more worryingly, was caught stealing 11 times against 26 successes. Considering his speed is his best tool and he was unable to reliably get steals against upper-level batteries, it is hard to project him as an asset in that category in the big leagues. He got a couple days in the majors in April, then came back up after the Triple-A season had ended in September, but received only six plate appearances due to being buried in the second base depth chart of an organization that prizes infield versatility. Johnson seemed to be in line for a crack at the major league second base job with the Dodgers, but following a trade to the Braves over the offseason, his spot on the major league roster is certainly more questionable. He could give Jace Peterson a run for his money at second base during the spring, but Johnson's ceiling for 2017 is still fairly low regardless of his initial showing with his new club.

2016

The White Sox handed Johnson the teamís starting second base job over Carlos Sanchez to begin the 2015 season. However, Johnson earned a quick hook down to Triple-A Charlotte after his defense was worse than expected while he hit an empty .270. He was fantastic at Charlotte after the demotion, posting 28 steals and an .841 OPS, but that line did not translate to the majors in a late-season recall. His feet are his best tool, but it remains to be seen if he can get on base enough at the major league level to utilize that skill. Traded to the Dodgers as part of a three-team swap in December, Johnson may end up opening 2016 in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League depending on the quality of the competition brought in for the starting job at second base.

2015

Johnson burst onto the scene in 2013 when he stole 84 bases across three minor league levels. He is still plenty fast, but his stolen base number fell to 22 (in 35 attempts) between Double- and Triple-A in 2014. Another cause for concern is that his OBP dropped from .414 to .314 with the promotion, but it should be noted that he suffered a similar drop when he was promoted from High-A to Double-A in 2013. Johnson eventually adjusted to the competition, providing hope he may be able to do so again in 2015 when he starts the year at Triple-A Charlotte. Johnson has made a strong case to serve as the White Sox's primary second baseman to begin the season, and there is a good chance he'll receive the Opening Day nod at the keystone.

2014

Johnson is the reigning king of the minor league basepaths. Johnson stole an MiLB-leading 84 bags (in 110 attempts) in his ascent to Double-A. He posted a .373 OBP over his 601 plate appearances, but it is worth noting that rate decreased as the level of competition grew more difficult (.422 to .309 to .227). He should start 2014 at Double-A with the chance to finish the year at Triple-A if he can get on base more consistently. He had surgery to repair a nerve in his right elbow during the offseason, but he should be ready for spring training.
