Past Fantasy Outlooks

2020
2019
Dean impressed in summer camp and was on the 2020 Opening Day roster, but he was one of the Cardinals who tested positive for COVID-19. He finally made his St. Louis debut in September only to go down a few days later with a strained right elbow. The injury proved to be season-ending, but Dean was said to be progressing well and was working out at Busch Stadium before the end of September, suggesting he should have been able to have a relatively normal offseason. Dean showed a nice little combination of bat-to-ball, pop and patience at Triple-A in the Marlins organization in 2019, although he was old for the level and it's difficult to see Dean breaking out of the pack in the Cardinals' outfield, as mediocre as that pack is. That said, he will be in the mix for a roster spot in spring training.
Dean has spent most of the past two seasons raking at Triple-A with a .331/.398/.546 slash line, but he's struggled over 98 games in the majors with a .656 OPS. 2020 will be the outfielder's age-27 season and it could be a make-or-break campaign for his career prospects. Dean could have trouble receiving consistent starts if he doesn't flash offensive improvement early on since he's a sub-par defender in the corner outfield. He should have a chance to earn a spot in the Marlins' Opening Day outfield, but Dean is nothing more than a sleeper in NL-only leagues until he shows he can carry over some of his minor-league success to the majors.
Dean was a member of two of the best-named teams in the minors last year: the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp and the New Orleans Baby Cakes. He hit .345/.410/.511 between the two levels with 12 homers, 71 runs and 68 RBI before finishing the season in Miami with a much less impressive line. Dean posted strong contact rates in the minors with some willingness to accept walks and is the type of player a rebuilding Marlins club should allow to play every day to see what they have. The current depth chart shows him as the everyday left fielder hitting in the middle of the lineup, which is a rather aggressive placement of his bat that has shown little at the major-league level. It also speaks to how little talent there is on the Miami roster. The minor-league skills are intriguing enough for a late-round dart throw in NL-only leagues, but that is as far as you should be willing to go.
