J.P. Martinez

28-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Atlanta Braves
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Martinez had his best season in the minors last year, posting career-highs across the board on the way to a .963 OPS while stealing 41 bags at three stops, mostly for Triple-A Round Rock. In August, with the Rangers in a playoff hunt and looking for potentially impactful bats off the bench, the club promoted Martinez on the same day it designated Bubba Thompson for assignment. He made a splash early on, reaching base safely in 10 of his first 22 plate appearances, then went one for his final 21 at-bats before heading back to the minors. His ability to draw a walk (16.0 BB%), make noise on the bases and occasional pop (14 HRs in 77 games) makes him intriguing -- especially since he cut down on strikeouts in 2023. Travis Jankowski and Robbie Grossman left for free agency, opening a role as a fourth (or fifth) outfielder for Martinez, but there's no cracking the starting core of Evan Carter, Leody Taveras and Adolis Garica, left to right, and top prospect Wyatt Langford is a more big-league ready bat than Martinez already. Making noise at Triple-A
OFAtlanta Braves  AAA
April 16, 2024
Martinez is slashing .340/.421/.580 through 13 games for Triple-A Gwinnett with two homers and seven steals in nine attempts.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old has also shown improved command of the strike zone with a 5:8 BB:K. Martinez fell short in his bid for a spot on the Opening Day roster, but he looks more than ready to step in should an injury hit the Atlanta outfield.

Chance for MLB debut?
OFTexas Rangers  AAA
August 6, 2023
Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News speculates Martinez could be in the mix for a promotion after Josh Jung suffered a broken thumb Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old outfielder wouldn't be a direct replacement for Jung at third base, but the versatility of Ezequiel Duran and Josh Smith could allow the Rangers to bolster their depth elsewhere. Martinez has 12 homers and 33 stolen bases with a .993 OPS at Triple-A Round Rock this season, though any major-league at-bats are likely to be infrequent if he is called up given the current good health of Texas' outfield.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2018
When Martinez agreed to his contract with the Rangers, the prevailing belief was that he'd be assigned to either High-A or Double-A out of the chute after impressing as a teenager in the Cuban National Series. Martinez played about a week in the Dominican Summer League and then spent the rest of the season at Low-A ball. The numbers look good at a glance, with Martinez posting a 121 wRC+, eight homers and 11 stolen bases in 60 games, but they weren't all that impressive when considering age versus level. The fact that he struck out 25.3% of the time at Low-A as a 22-year-old raises real concerns about his ability to hit upper-level pitching. Martinez went on to fare well in the Arizona Fall League, though the caliber of the pitching in this year's AFL was pretty low. There's some upside here, but he has to make enough contact for the other tools to shine through, and we haven't seen enough yet to suggest the odds of him doing so are particularly good.
The Rangers compiled international bonus funds in hopes of signing Shohei Ohtani. They were unsuccessful, but still made use of their full bonus pool, giving Martinez a $2.8 million bonus in March of 2018. A 5-foot-10 power/speed center fielder who turns 22 on March 21, Martinez will be ready to handle High-A or Double-A at the outset of the season. He has double-plus speed, which will be his fantasy carrying tool, but also has plus raw power. There are strikeout concerns, so it's possible that he never hits better than .250 in the majors, but even so, there's a chance for Carlos Gomez-esque production in his peak years.
