Healthy for camp

March 6, 2023
Nova (knee) is participating in the Astros' minor-league camp and was available off the bench for Houston's 6-0 win over St. Louis in the Grapefruit League last Thursday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old infielder looks to be fully healthy again after missing the majority of the 2022 season while recovering from September 2021 surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. Nova was able to make three rehab appearances in the rookie-level Florida Complex League in late June, but he didn't see any action after that, either due to a setback or due to the Astros taking a cautious approach with his recovery. Now that he's further removed from surgery and taking part in minor-league camp, Nova will likely open the 2023 campaign at High-A Asheville or Single-A Fayetteville.

In his age-18 season, Nova showed that he still has plenty of the traits typically found in young, raw hitters -- he rarely walks (3.8 BB%) and is extremely pull-heavy (62.2 Pull%) -- but he also displayed the significant upside that landed him on the dynasty-league radar a couple years ago. Despite that minuscule walk rate, he was 20% better than the average Gulf Coast League hitter, cranking out six home runs (tied for sixth in the league) while rarely striking out (13.4 K%). Nova (6-foot-1, 180 pounds) saw time at second base, but could stick at shortstop long term. He is a plus runner with the potential to develop plus game power in the coming years -- tools that separate him from most shortstop prospects. However, he won't be a fast riser through the system. The Astros know he has plenty of work to do on both sides of the ball, so look for him to be held back in extended spring training before being assigned to the New York-Penn League.
One man gathers what another man spills, and the Astros appear to have scooped up a potential five-tool shortstop. Houston swooped in and signed Nova for $1.2 million during the 2016 July 2 international signing period after the Marlins balked on the athletic shortstop when he tested positive for steroids in February 2016. His professional debut in the Dominican Summer League was a huge success, as he was 10 percent better than league average (110 wRC+) and only struck out 17.4 percent of the time while showing off impressive power and speed. Nova, who measures in at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds and turned 18 this offseason, may outgrow shortstop, but he has the upside to someday be a top-10 prospect in the game, even at third base. Considering he has not yet made his stateside debut, the lead time and risk are extreme, but in deeper dynasty leagues, owners need to get aggressive on toolsy Latin American hitters and roster them before they blow up.
