2024 Fantasy Outlook
Delay spent the 2023 season as the Pirates' backup catcher, initially to Austin Hedges and ultimately to Endy Rodriguez. That will be the best-case scenario for him in 2024, as a combination of Rodriguez and Henry Davis is almost certain to account for the majority of plate appearances behind the dish. To dampen Delay's outlook further, the Pirates signed Ali Sanchez to a one-year major league deal early this offseason, leaving him most likely to start the season in the minors. Even if injuries force Delay into a more significant role, he has just a career .078 ISO and .233 batting average across 354 plate appearances in the majors. Read Past Outlooks

April 9, 2024
Delay (knee) remains shut down from all baseball activities, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Delay has been out for the last week with right knee inflammation and appears to have made little-to-no progress. He's eligible for activation in mid-April, but clearly the catcher will not be ready at that time.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Chance to win backup job?
CPittsburgh Pirates
March 5, 2024
Manager Derek Shelton hasn't named a backup to starting catcher Yasmani Grandal, per Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, indicating Delay could win the job during spring training.
ANALYSIS
Grandal won't be a full-time starter in his age-35 campaign, and 2021 first overall pick Henry Davis primarily played right field as a rookie last season, with the Pirates seemingly unwilling to commit to him as one of their top two catchers. Pittsburgh's secondary backstop will likely receive plenty of playing time, though that role won't bring fantasy relevance by itself. Delay played in a career-high 70 contests last season and had a .251/.319/.347 slash line, which isn't terrible for a backup catcher that provides solid defense.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Delay was among a rotation of catchers the Pirates used during the 2022 season after trading away Jacob Stallings. He led the team's backstops with 167 plate appearances but was dreadful from an offensive perspective, striking out at a 29.9 percent clip. Delay also had no power to speak of, as illustrated by a .058 ISO. Delay has some defensive value, but that wasn't enough to save his spot on the 40-man roster as he was designated for assignment in November of 2022. Though he remains in the Pirates' organization, Delay shouldn't factor heavily into the team's plans behind the dish in 2023. Even if he does, there won't be any notable production at the plate.
