Rest-of-Season Projections
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Rom had a steady rise throughout the minors after the Orioles made him a fourth-round pick out of high school back in 2018. He's posted at least a 26.1 percent strikeout rate at each minor-league stop since A-ball, but while the whiffs have been there, his walks and ERA have ballooned against higher competition. This past season, Rom collected a 4.82 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 11.4 percent walk rate at the Triple-A level. The left-hander was traded to St. Louis as part of the return for Jack Flaherty and was torched for an 8.02 ERA and 2.08 WHIP across eight starts during his first stint in the majors. Rom did a really good job of avoiding the long ball in the minors, but he didn't have such luck against big league hitters, serving up seven bombs in 33.2 frames. The southpaw might be a little interesting if he could find more velocity, but as it stands right now he seems destined to be an up-and-down rotation piece between St. Louis and Triple-A Memphis in 2024. Lands on injured list
The Cardinals placed Rom (biceps) on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander recently took a step back from throwing due to a biceps injury and will be sidelined for at least the first couple weeks of the season. The specifics of the injury remain unclear, so Rom could be unavailable beyond the 15-day minimum.
