ANALYSIS
The veteran backstop faced an uphill climb to a roster spot given the presence of Willson Contreras, Miguel Montero and Kyle Schwarber, but Corporan's .200 batting average in 20 spring at-bats ultimately sealed his fate. The 33-year-old should be nothing more than an organizational depth piece this season.

Corporan played in 33 games as Texas' backup catcher before a sprained thumb ligament ended his season in mid-July. He provided little with the bat when healthy, hitting just .178 with three homers, and opted for free agency in late October. He's expected to land a NRI/minor-league deal with some team in advance of spring training, but there's no upside here.
Houston's surplus of catchers makes Corporan a likely trade candidate prior to Opening Day. The 31-year-old hit six home runs in 55 games last season as the backup to Jason Castro, but that might have been his only highlight. Corporan hasn't hit higher than .235 in any season with over 50 games played and he threw out baserunners at a mere 22% clip last season. Even in two-catcher leagues, there is very little to get excited about here, but he'll have a clearer path to playing time following a January trade to Texas.
As the Astros' No. 2 catcher, Corporan registered career-high totals in games played (64), home runs (seven) and RBI (20). The switch-hitting backstop turned in a strong first half, but lost his way at the plate after the All-Star break, with a dreadful .154/.212/.256 line. While Corporan's plate discipline (0.17 BB/K) and contact rate (69%) were downright terrible, he at least offered modest power production in limited plate appearances. Corporan will likely play a similar schedule this season, drawing a couple of starts per week to relieve All-Star Jason Castro. He will need to show improvement offensively, however, to keep catching prospect Max Stassi at bay in the minors.
Corporan got into about half as many games as he did in 2011, but made the most of his time by hitting .269 and slugging .449. He has spent the bulk of his 10-year career in the minors, but is decent defensively with the ability to call an adequate game and throw out his share of runners. Corporan would be a passable backup catcher, but his playing time in 2013 is far from guaranteed at this point.
Signed minor league contract with Arizona in December 2009.
