Weekly Pitcher Rankings: Roy Wonder

Weekly Pitcher Rankings: Roy Wonder

This article is part of our Weekly Pitcher Rankings series.

Like last week's Meter, this one is also a tough one to forecast with anything close to 100-percent accuracy. A lot of teams are pitching Mr. Undecided this week, so I'm left making several judgment calls. Has to be done, but if you're up in arms that I forecast one start for Rodrigo Lopez and he winds up with two, please check yourself.

For the week 7/18– 7/24

Notes:
There's probably nothing to it, but the Tigers are reportedly "checking in" on Ubaldo Jimenez. I can't imagine the Rockies dealing their ace for anything less than the Tigers' top three prospects, but Detroit is certainly aggressively shopping for pitching. ... If you're holding out hope that Johan Santana (shoulder) will return and carry your team to a title, it's probably best to temper those expectations. Santana could return as soon as a month from now, but I'm just not seeing a huge return. Ideally, for the Mets, he comes back and makes four or five starts to boost his offseason trade value. ... Clay Hensley had a 9:9 K:BB in 15 innings out of the bullpen, so it's hard to see him having much success in the rotation this week unless perhaps the Mets trade Carlos Beltran. Hensley is expected to face Chris Capuano not once, but twice this week. Riveting indeed. ... With an off-day Thursday, the Phillies, I assume, will go with a four-man rotation this week, making both Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay two-start starters. Halladay could just get one if the Phillies elect to use Kyle Kendrick, but either way you're starting Halladay, I hope. ... Barry Enright will get the call to replace Zach Duke for Monday's start for the D-Backs. Enright looks like a Quad-A guy at this point, so stay away. ... Yovani Gallardo's velocity remains strong, so he's not likely hiding an injury, but the results have been so unpredictable. I'm also a little worried that he's thrown the seventh-most pitches in the game. ... Jake Westbrook, Kyle Lohse and Kyle McClellan have 5.50-plus ERAs this month for the Cardinals. At some point the Cardinals probably consider stretching Lance Lynn (23:4 K:BB in 21.2 innings) out and inserting him in place of one of those three.

Notes: Bartolo Colon
has been brutal since returning from a hamstring injury, but don't drop him just yet. Reserve him this week and hope that Colon is just struggling to trust that he's 100 percent. ... Monitor his progress over the weekend, but Scott Baker (elbow) appears set to return on Monday barring a setback in his throwing regimen. ... Jon Lester (lat) appears to be set to return during the weekend series against Seattle, but write his name in pencil for now. ... Consecutive shutouts will do this, but I'm starting to trust Derek Holland a bit more now. He's been woefully inconsistent in his brief career, but the talent is there for him to be the team's best pitcher the rest of the way. Hop aboard the bandwagon if you dare. ... Tough to see Brett Anderson having to undergo Tommy John surgery. That begs the question as to why he didn't go under the knife right away. Now we're probably looking at a late-2012 return at best. ... The only thing I know for sure regarding the Orioles' rotation this week is that Jeremy Guthrie and Jake Arrieta are starting on Tuesday/Wednesday. Other than that – crapshoot. I suspect we'll see Alfredo Simon, Mitch Atkins and Chris Tillman. Yucko. ... Wade Davis is expected to return this week from a forearm injury, so while we don't know the exact return date, we'll slot him in against the Royals. ... I'm going with a six-man rotation for the White Sox this week because, well, I don't have an inkling that they won't lean that way with John Danks (oblique) returning this week. ... Erik Bedard (knee) should return this week, but with that start projected to be in Boston, he's a sketchy play in shallower formats. ... I can't recall who the pitching coach is in Cleveland, but with breakouts from Justin Masterson and Josh Tomlin, as well as perhaps Carlos Carrasco, the guy deserves a raise. Then to think that Alex White (finger) and Drew Pomeranz (prospect) may be as talented as those guys and you can see the Indians having a nice run over the next several years. ... Jo-Jo Reyes has received the fifth most run support in baseball yet he's managed to go just 5-7. Safe to say Reyes is on a short leash, with Zach Stewart likely next in line.
