Closer Watch

Angels - Scott Downs pitched a perfect ninth inning to convert his fourth save of the season. For now, it appears he's the primary closer while Ernesto Frieri will collect any match-up based opportunities or those that become available on days where Downs can't pitch due to recent workload concerns.

Mariners - Brandon League suffered his fourth blown save of the season giving up three runs on a pair of hits and two walks. Tom Wilhelmsen recorded a scoreless eighth inning, and while he's been far from dominant there's reason to think he could be next in line for closer duty if the Mariners decide to make a change.

Yankees - Rafael Soriano improved to 4-for-4 in save opportunities since taking over for Mariano Rivera and David Robertson. Further, Soriano has not allowed a run since May 10. With the news that Robertson will not be ready to return against the Tigers during the first week of June, Soriano's time in the ninth-inning role continues to increase.

Cardinals - Jason Motte pitched a scoreless ninth inning during a tie-game Friday night, but was brought back in to pitch the 10th and gave up the eventual game-winning home run to Hunter Pence. Motte has been knocked around in a few of his recent appearances, but the Cards have provided no indication of his job being in jeopardy.

Marlins - Heath Bell gave up two runs on three hits while recording just one out during a save opportunity Friday night. Steve Cishek came on to finish the game with a strikeout in two-thirds of a scoreless frame to shut the door on the Giants for his first save of the season. Although Bell recently converted a string of save chances, he's still failing to miss bats and could begin to lose save opportunities again in the near future.

Recommended Pickup

Steve Cishek, RP, MIA - Call it a hunch, but Heath Bell has one strikeout in his last four innings and following his latest implosion Friday night against the Giants, a stint on the disabled list can't be ruled out as the Marlins need to find a way to try and get him back on track without having him pitch in the ninth inning in save situations for a couple of weeks. Prior to Friday, Bell converted four straight save opportunities without allowing a run or a walk, but a 5.40 K/9IP and 6.48 BB/9IP for the season point to larger issues that still need to be ironed out. If you're currently chasing saves and the previous Cishek owner trying to take advantage of Bell's struggles has given up, you should strongly consider adding him to see how things play out with the ninth inning in Miami for the next couple of weeks.

Other Recent Recommendations: Justin Morneau, Alex Cobb, Tyler Clippard, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Andy Dirks.
