Notes: Jaime Garcia
is out indefinitely with shoulder issues, so do the Cardinals have another Lance Lynn ready to step up? Doubtful, though Joe Kelly got the nod over Brandon Dickson, at least initially. Shelby Miller is obviously another name to keep in mind, but he has a 5.18 ERA and 1.68 WHIP in Triple-A, so his turn will have to wait. ... Lynn and R.A. Dickey have nine wins. Chris Capuano has eight. Cliff Lee: 0. ... Assuming he's allowed to pitch, Stephen Strasburg would combine with Gio Gonzalez to form a very tough 1-2 punch in the playoffs. I wonder whether the Nationals will start skipping Strasburg here and there to allow him to pitch into October. ... This could be an interesting rotation in a couple years: James McDonald, Gerrit Cole, Jameson Taillon, Mark Appel and Brad Lincoln. Four top-10 picks and an emerging star in McDonald. ... Clayton Kershaw remains a must-star, of course, but he's reportedly dealing with a sore foot. Therapy hopefully solves that issue. ... Fun fact: the Reds top six relievers in May: 84:21 K:BB in 65.1 innings with a 1.52 ERA. ... Given Alex White was a first-round pick, I'm inclined to cut him some slack for his 5.66 ERA. He looked pretty decent despite allowing four runs Friday, posting a 6:0 K:BB.

Notes:
In his next outing, Chris Sale will surpass his innings total from last year. I wonder whether a bullpen stint will be in order soon. ... Felipe Paulino's starts this week are in jeopardy due to a groin injury, so monitor his status over the weekend. ... Jake Arrieta has a 5.53 ERA, but his 61:23 K:BB in 70 innings is an indicator that he's had some bad luck. ... The Dan Bard experiment was an utter disaster, but at least Boston scored with Felix Doubront – 3.75 ERA, 66:25 K:BB in 62.1 innings. ... Drew Smyly had a 1.59 ERA through six starts, but now has a 7.76 mark in his last five. He'll need to turn things around soon to avoid a Triple-A stint. ... It looks like John Danks is set to return for the weekend series with the Dodgers. It may be best to keep him benched for at least his first start. ... Chris Tillman has a 65:26 K:BB in 67.1 Triple-A innings this year, and with a 1.74 ERA in his last three starts, he could be in line for a second chance in Baltimore soon. ... Jon Lester is historically a slow starter, so seeing him kicking things into gear soon wouldn't be a big surprise. ... Kyle Drabek may ultimately be a successful starter, but not with his current 6.0 BB/9IP. He's going to need to improve his control soon to avoid Triple-A. ... Casey Crosby's stock has fallen due to injuries, but he was a top prospect, so be patient. ... Scott Diamond had a 5.56 ERA at Triple-A last year, but he's shown excellent control with four walks in 38.2 innings, and he's keeping the ball on the ground.
