Rounding Third: Week 7 Primer

This article is part of our Rounding Third series.

Week 7 Primer

Chris and I ranted in our recent video segment and again in Charging the Mound, so I won't belabor the point too much, but to illustrate how badly the Pirates could have used Gregory Polanco on Sunday night against the Cards. Instead of Polanco and Kendrys Morales, the Pirates had Clint Barmes, Ike Davis and Jordy Mercer at their disposal.

Week 7 Noteworthy Schedules

For once, the Rockies have a bad schedule, with just five games this week, the first two at Kansas City, sandwiched by off-days. The Phillies also have just five games, hosting two against the Angels followed by three home games against the Reds.

The best six-game schedule has to belong to the Padres, who play three in Cincinnati and then three in Coors Field.

The following teams have seven games this week - Angels, Orioles, Cubs, Marlins, Yankees, Mets, Giants, Cardinals, Rays and Blue Jays. The Giants and Cardinals are at home for all seven games each with good matchups - both face the Braves, the Giants face the Marlins and the Cardinals get the Cubs for four games.

Here are the interleague matchups, with the home team listed first.

- Phillies-Angels (Tue-Wed) - The Angels are on fire right now, and the Phillies' bullpen is worn thin. They actually need their two off-days this week. Raul Ibanez and C.J. Cron will likely miss out on playing time in Philly.
- Royals-Rockies (Tue-Wed) - The Rockies' outfield logjam will temporarily be

- Royals-Rockies (Tue-Wed) - The Rockies' outfield logjam will temporarily be relieved most likely, with the chance for three of Charlie Blackmon, Corey Dickerson, Drew Stubbs and Brandon Barnes able to start. On Wednesday the Royals are starting lefty Jason Vargas, so it's conceivable all four outfielders could play if the Rockies want to give Justin Morneau a day off.
- Yankees-Mets (Mon-Thur) - The Subway Series commences with two games in each park, beginning Monday in Yankee Stadium. The world is shortchanged of a couple of Bartolo Colon plate appearances this week as a result.
- Yankees-Pirates (Fri-Sun) - The Yankees have a full week of interleague play. The Pirates get the use of a DH this week, and surely they won't call up Gregory Polanco because they're cheap, and no I won't let go of this issue.

For more on the pitching matchups, please check out our indispensable Projected Starters Grid. I use that frequently to aid my free agent bidding and my lineups, both for two-start starters and for matchups. And then refer to Paul Sporer's excellent Pitcher Value Meter to settle any ties in your starting pitching matchups.

FREE AGENT RESULTS

In this section I'll try to list as many of the free agent results as I can from my Sunday deadline leagues. Due to time constraints, the commentary will frequently be short.

Banged Up Bravos Corey Dickerson (CF) 3

As alluded, I really like the Padres' schedule this week, and I like that Grandal is getting healthy, at one point playing four games in a row. I could see him playing four games in great hitting environments this week, maybe five, so I'll start him ahead of Welington Castillo this week.

Vogelsong has stabilized over the last 30 days, and while he's not going to be a huge strikeout guy, he gets two home starts against the Braves and Marlins this week. I finally cut bait on Joe Kelly and his hamstring - I can't hold the roster spot for another month with the payoff isn't that high. I'll have a good enough chance to re-acquire him later. Drew Pomeranz was my first preference in free agent bidding this week, but as you can see, I was an order of magnitude away from getting him.

I added Conger because I lost Matt Wieters. Sigh - Wieters sticks on my reserve roster for now until we hear more about his elbow. My drops this week besides Kelly were David Freese and Abraham Almonte.
