Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wednesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

Jose Berrios, MIN vs. CWS ($42): A DFS player who watched Berrios during his debut last year likely wouldn't have expected to see his name among the most expensive assets so quickly, but the 23-year-old seems to have solved his command problem (7.7 percent walk rate) while notching a 10.0 RAA with his fastball over seven starts. The White Sox are a bottom 10 team against the heater, and hold a .306 wOBA against right-handed pitchers.

Jordan Montgomery, NYY vs. LAA ($36): Montgomery often gets overlooked when we talk about hurlers who can miss bats, but the 24-year-old has notched a 13 percent swinging strike rate, which has contributed to 66 strikeouts in 69 innings (12 starts). The Angels have logged a .301 wOBA to go along with just a .118 ISO against southpaws.

Catcher

Buster Posey, SF at ATL ($20): Sean Newcomb has done well to keep the ball off the barrel through the first two starts of his major-league career, but has logged a 10:6 K:BB ratio over 12.1 innings. Posey has walked more often than he has struck out against lefties, and has kept a .217 ISO over 69 at-bats.

First Base

Matt Carpenter, STL at PHI ($18): Opposition starter Nick Pivetta remains a target of mine despite his brilliant performance against the Red Sox last week, as he has walked a whopping 15 percent of the left-handed batters he has faced over seven starts this season. Carpenter has handled the fastball to the tune of a 14.4 RAA, while managing a .266 ISO against opposite-handed pitchers.

Second Base

Jason Kipnis, CLE at BAL ($20): Kipnis hasn't hit for much of an average this season, but has maintained his power stroke against righties throughout, logging a .192 ISO over 120 at-bats. Kevin Gausman throws four significantly below average pitches but none rate worse than his fastball, which has registered a -7.8 RAA over 75 innings.

Third Base

Wilmer Flores, NYM at LAD ($14): You can't talk about Rich Hill without mentioning his curveball. The lefty has thrown the pitch more than 37 percent of the time this season despite the fact that it has yielded a -6.4 RAA. Flores has notched a 3.3 RAA against the pitch, while registering a .170 ISO against left-handed pitching.

Shortstop

Corey Seager, LAD vs. NYM ($21): I would have made this recommendation before Seager's three-homer game Tuesday, but it never hurts to pick on someone who is swinging a good bat. Seager has been relentless against right-handed pitchers, tallying a .380 wOBA and a 49 percent hard contact rate. Tyler Pill may emerge as a serviceable backend rotation option someday, but he allows far too many balls in play to stay safe against a high-powered offense. He also struck out just 26 batters in 53 innings at Triple-A Las Vegas this season.

Outfield

Brett Gardner, NYY vs. LAA ($19): Ricky Nolasco's fastball has returned a -11.3 RAA this season. Gardner has notched a 10.0 RAA against the fastball to go along with his .224 ISO against right-handed pitching. Gardner is one of four Yankees who hold a top 30 mark against the heater, which could make the Bombers an ideal stack against a weak pitcher in the Bronx.

J.D. Martinez, DET at SEA ($19): James Paxton may not be broken, but he is definitely malfunctioning. The 28-year-old has allowed 14 runs over his last 12.2 innings (three starts) while walking nine batters over that span. Martinez's .636 ISO against lefties is based off just 22 at-bats, but it's worth noting that he carries strong numbers (.238 ISO, .377 wOBA) against southpaws over 626 career at-bats.

Khris Davis, OAK vs. HOU ($19): Mike Fiers has been on a nice run of late but has still allowed a .590 slugging percentage against same-handed hitters this season. Davis has kept a .288 ISO and a 41 percent hard contact rate against righties over 208 at-bats.
