FanDuel MLB: Wednesday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Wednesday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Jordan Montgomery, NYY vs. LAA ($8,200): Wednesday's main slate takes the clear ace (Max Scherzer) out of play, and doesn't leave a wealth of aces available for the evening contests. The Angels trot out Ricky Nolasco and his 5.01 ERA and 2-8 record to oppose Montgomery, and come into the game with a .302 wOBA (.290 on the road) and .118 ISO against lefties. Montgomery appears to be figuring out the big leagues, owning a 2.89 ERA and .289 wOBA against in June, and he has a 27.1 percent strikeout rate at home compared to 18.5 percent on the road.

Catcher

Gary Sanchez, NYY vs. LAA ($3,800): While I remain an advocate for not paying too much for a catcher, Sanchez is a premium bat in a premium lineup that's priced fairly. His .399 wOBA, 152 wRC+ and .262 ISO speak for themselves, and his homer Tuesday suggests he's over a groin injury. A matchup with Nolasco, who has allowed a .386 wOBA and .932 OPS to righties, certainly doesn't hurt.

First Base

Justin Smoak, TOR at TEX ($3,600): Smoak has hit safely in nine of his last 10 entering Thursday, launching five homers in the process. It's led to a .384 wOBA and a 40 percent hard hit and fly ball rate against righties. This game comes with the highest total on the board at 11.

Second Base

Brian Dozier, MIN vs. CWS ($3,500): Dozier has knocked around southpaws, owning a team-high .446 wOBA, 182 wRC+ and 1.066 OPS across 52 plate appearances. He's been consistent through each of the season's first three months and the game has a solidly high total of 10 while the Twins are a heavy (-190) favorite.

Third Base

Justin Turner, LAD vs. NYM ($4,000): Given his current form, this price remains a bargain, and I think it's possible casual managers will take the more obvious play in Clay Bellinger against Mets rookie Tyler Pill. Turner was hitting .399 and rode a 14-game hitting streak into Tuesday night, 10 times gaining multiple knocks. He has a .442 wOBA, 179 wRC+ and 1.020 OPS against righties.

Shortstop

Jose Reyes, NYM at LAD ($2,800): Reyes has multiple hits in three of his last four games, three of which have found the bleachers. He's a career .341 wOBA guy against lefties, seemingly in line with the .331 wOBA he has this season. Soft-tossing Rich Hill has allowed a .348 wOBA to righties at home and has a 6.92 ERA in June.

Outfield

Carlos Gomez, TEX vs. TOR ($3,700): Gomez ranks first among Rangers regulars against righties, owning a .375 wOBA, 132 wRC + and 42.9 percent hard hit rate. He had eight RBI in his first four games since returning from the DL on June 16 and will face Jays starter Joe Biagini, who allowed six runs and eight hits in his last inning against the White Sox.

Aaron Hicks, NYY vs. LAA ($3,400): Hicks owns a .408 wOBA and 158 wRC+ against righties on the year, the second highest marks on the team. Also, his .946 OPS lends itself to a bit of upside against the aforementioned Nolasco, who is allowing a .357 wOBA to opposing lefties.

Lonnie Chisenhall, CLE at BAL ($2,900): It's borderline irresponsible for owners to not go against Orioles starter Kevin Gausman in some capacity (6.60 ERA, eight or more hits allowed in seven straight.) Teammate Bradley Zimmer ($3,000) looks like a solid play, but I like Chisenhall's floor and ceiling more. He brings a .380 wOBA and .330 ISO against righties into Wednesday, but his strikeout rate (17.2 percent) is 13.2 percent lower than Zimmer's, and his .266 BABIP suggests there's room for modest growth.
