Yahoo DFS Baseball: Tuesday Picks

PITCHER

Max Scherzer, WAS vs. CHC ($64): I'm still tempted to go with Justin Verlander to save money, but Scherzer can't be ignored, no matter the price. Verlander's former teammate is mowing down the opposition with double-digit strikeouts in his last six starts, reaching at least seven innings in every appearance. The Cubs sit near the bottom of the league with a .311 wOBA and 22.3 K% against righties. Since the start of June, that K% is up at 23.2, so Scherzer could be headed for another huge day.

Mike Fiers, HOU vs. OAK ($36): I was looking to save money on my second pitcher and Fiers is the answer. The righty won in Oakland in his last start, giving up three hits in six innings and gets the Athletics again, this time in pitcher-friendly Houston. Fiers remains consistent, which is why I like him for the price, having allowed two runs total in his last four starts. Oakland has a decent wOBA (.324) against righties, but a high K% at 24.9 gives Fiers more value.

CATCHER

Devin Mesoraco, CIN vs. MIL ($13): At a decent price, this is a perfect matchup for Mesoraco, who has a .418 wOBA and .283 ISO against righties. It's perfect because Junior Guerra is much worse against righties, allowing a .349 wOBA to go with a 6.01 xFIP.

FIRST BASE

Matt Adams, ATL at SD ($20): A little cheaper than the high-end first basemen, Adams can provide the same kind of pop with his .398 wOBA and .283 ISO against righties. Those numbers jump to .455 and .370 since the start of June (84 plate appearances). As for Jhoulys Chacin, he's yet to figure out lefties with a .390 wOBA allowed and 5.73 xFIP.

SECOND BASE

Yolmer Sanchez, CWS vs. NYY ($8): If you chose not to go big on pitching, Scooter Gennett ($16) makes sense here, but Sanchez is the value play. He has fine numbers against righties with a .318 wOBA, but Luis Severino's struggles are what led me to him. Severino has given up nine runs in his last two starts and has worse numbers against lefties (.285 wOBA, 3.54 xFIP).

THIRD BASE

Travis Shaw, MIL at CIN ($18): Shaw hasn't been as consistent over the last week, but I'm not worried about that against Tim Adleman. The righty has a 6.02 xFIP against lefties and has walked eight batters in his last two starts. His 15.3 K% against lefties fits nice for Shaw and his 18.7 K%, .394 wOBA and .276 ISO against righties.

SHORTSTOP

J.T. Riddle, MIA vs. NYM ($8): This is mainly a value play against Robert Gsellman because Riddle hasn't been able to do much at the plate lately. His numbers are better against righties with a .276 wOBA and smaller K% (20.0), but Gsellman could help that. The righty hurler has hit a rough patch, giving up 20 hits and 14 runs in his last two starts.

OUTFIELD

Nick Markakis, ATL at SD ($16): This feels like a good time to go against Chacin again with a lefty. Most of Markakis' success has come against righties with a .335 wOBA and lower 18.1 K%. Chacin isn't pitching terribly, but he still gives up runs and has a much worse K% against lefties (13.3) that should give Markakis plenty of opportunities.

J.D. Martinez, DET vs. KC ($18): Martinez has cooled off since his hot start, but is still worth taking against lefties with a .662 wOBA and .556 ISO in 33 plate appearances. Matt Strahm is set for another start for the Royals probably won't make it past five innings. He fell apart in the fourth inning last time out and gave up five runs and seven hits. Strahm's 5.02 xFIP against righties is slightly worrisome against a righty-heavy lineup.

Jackie Bradley Jr., BOS vs. MIN ($19): Bradley hasn't faced many lefties this season (46 plate appearances), but has done work against them with a .494 wOBA and .333 ISO. He's also hit safely in 14 of his last 16 so he shouldn't come up with a dud against Hector Santiago. The southpaw hasn't seen many lefties himself (51 batters faced), but has struggled in those limited appearances with a .637 wOBA allowed and 9.76 xFIP.
