ANALYSIS
Christon's $1.3 million salary was set to be guaranteed on Sunday, so the Thunder opted to let him go after a uneventful preseason. They also let go of fellow point guard Isaiah Canaan, which leaves Raymond Felton to take on the backup role behind Russell Westbrook. Superstar additions Carmelo Anthony and Paul George are also more than capable of doing some ball handling, so the Thunder didn't have a huge need for a third point guard. Christon could receive interest elsewhere on a team in need of depth in the backcourt, though if he fails to find a suitor, he could start the season in the G-League or overseas.

Christon surprisingly appeared in 64 games for the Thunder as a rookie last season -- averaging 15.2 minutes per game -- while providing depth off the bench at both guard positions. His sophomore campaign is shaping up in a similar fashion, as he’s currently expected to play behind Russell Westbrook and Raymond Felton, with even more limited opportunities at the shooting guard position. The 24-year-old needs to improve his shot after only converting 34.5 percent of his field-goal attempts and 54.8 percent of his free-throw attempts, but even a drastic improvement won’t likely improve his position on the depth chart.
The 55th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, Christon will get his first chance to crack the Thunder’s 15-man roster after a strong showing with the team during the Orlando Summer League in July. The 23-year-old point guard played in four games and finished with averages of 16.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.5 steals per game. The Thunder have 15 guaranteed contracts going into the 2016-17 season, and with Christon not being one of them, he'll likely have a tough time making the regular season roster. Furthermore, Russell Westbrook, Cameron Payne, and Ronnie Price all sit ahead of him on the depth chart at point guard, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Christon play another year in the D-League or overseas, after spending his 2015-16 season in the Italian Serie A Basketball League.
A second-round draft pick in 2014, Christon was traded to the Thunder from the Charlotte Hornets for cash and will likely spend the upcoming season in the D-League. Christon is an ultra athletic point guard that left Xavier after his sophomore season, when he went for 17.0 points and 4.2 assists per contest. At 6-3, Christon is a good sized ball handler, but he's more of a scoring guard, and his jump shot lacks the consistency needed to keep NBA defenses honest. Christon will sit behind Russell Westbrook, Reggie Jackson, and Sebastian Telfair on the Thunder's depth chart and will struggle to play regular minutes in the rotation.
