ANALYSIS
Whitehead has not appeared in an NBA game since 2017-18 and spent majority of last season with the G League's Grand Rapids Drive. He will try to make enough of an impression in the summer league to earn an invitation to an NBA training camp later in the offseason.

After being selected with 42nd pick of the 2016 NBA Draft, Whitehead surprisingly got a ton of run during his rookie campaign, as starter Jeremy Lin was limited to just 36 games because of a nagging hamstring injury. He ended up moving back and forth between the top unit and the bench, with the likes of Randy Foye, Spencer Dinwiddie and Sean Kilpatrick all getting some run at the position as well. That translated to Whitehead starting 26 of the 73 games he played in, with respectable first-year averages of 7.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists across 22.5 minutes. He did shoot just 29.5 percent from the three-point line and had 1.9 turnovers per game, but that's not all too surprising considering he was pushed into action quicker than usual for rookie second-round picks. Going into the 2017-18 campaign, Whitehead isn't expected to be relied upon as much. The Nets traded for former No. 2 overall pick D'Angelo Russell in the offseason and Jeremy Lin is expected to be back to full strength, leaving Whitehead in just a small role off the bench. He should struggle to match his 22.5 minutes per game from his rookie season and will largely remain off the Fantasy radar, barring any injuries higher up on the depth chart.
The Nets paid $3 million to move up 13 spots and grab Whitehead with the 42nd overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. That's a sizeable investment in a second-round pick and an indication of how highly new GM Sean Marks thinks of the local product. Whitehead, a former high school All-American out of Brooklyn's renowned Lincoln High School -- which counts Stephon Marbury, Lance Stephenson and Sebastian Telfair among its alumni -- earned unanimous First-Team All Big East honors last season at Seton Hall, averaging 18.2 points, 5.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.4 blocks per game. The 6-foot-4 combo guard is an explosive scorer, but converted just 37.9 percent of his field goals last season, a concerning number for a high-volume shooter. The good news is he shot nearly 37 percent from three-point range, so his perimeter game isn't necessarily a major concern. While Whitehead's upside is relatively high by second-round pick standards, he's unlikely to be an impact player as a rookie. Veterans Jeremy Lin and Greivis Vasquez are firmly ahead of Whitehead on the depth chart at point guard, while the Nets are stocked with a number of serviceable, if ultimately unimpressive, shooting guards.
