2023 Fantasy Outlook
Edwards put up career-high numbers across multiple categories during his third season in the NBA, averaging 24.4 points with 5.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.6 steals and 2.7 three-pointers. Not only was he able to up his scoring output, but he did so while increasing his efficiency from the floor. Sadly, the same cannot be said for his free throw shooting, where he shot a career-low 75.6 percent. The 2022-23 season was one full of frustration for the Timberwolves, and it's fair to say they will feel as though they never really got out of the blocks. An injury-free season for Karl-Anthony Towns will be priority number one for the medical and coaching staff. Towns' presence on the floor will impact what Edwards can do, especially offensively. However, Edwards' increase in production across all three of his seasons thus far would indicate he is on track for potentially the best season of his young career. He ended last season as the 27th-ranked player in standard leagues, all but assuring managers will have to reach into the second round to acquire his services moving forward. Should he get his free throw shooting closer to 80 percent, there is no reason to think he can't give the first-round a nudge. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Edwards was born on Aug. 5, 2001 in Atlanta, Georgia. He's worn the No. 5 jersey since high school to honor his mother and grandmother, who both died from cancer on the fifth day of separate months. As a result, Edwards was raised by his sister and brother. Edwards worked as an instructor at various youth camps during high school. Playing basketball at Holy Spirit Preparatory School, Edwards was rated a consensus five-star recruit and he earned McDonald's All-American and USA Today All-USA first team honors. While at Georgia in college, he intended to major in marketing. However, his freshman basketball campaign went so well that he opted to declare for the 2020 NBA Draft after being named SEC Freshman of the Year. Fans can follow Edwards on Twitter @theantman05. Edwards' first and only season at Georgia was wildly successful from an individual standpoint, as he remained on the Wooden Award watchlist all season long before eventually winning SEC Rookie of the Year honors, in addition to a second-team all-conference nod. He made an immediate impact as one of Georgia's highest-rated recruits in recent memory, and his role was so great that he led the entire conference in field-goal attempts (505). Edwards seemed to shine brightest when on the national stage, as he scored a season-high 37 points in a non-conference matchup Nov. 26 against Michigan State. It was one of three 30-point efforts in a season that saw Edwards average 19.1 PPG on 40.2 percent shooting. That mark was good enough to lead all freshmen in the nation, as well as earn him SEC Freshman of the Week honors on four separate occasions. While Edwards did not get to help Georgia steal a tournament bid via the SEC tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he still entered the 2020 NBA Draft as one of the highest-rated prospects.

Candidate to return to Team USA
GMinnesota Timberwolves
January 23, 2024
Edwards is in the player pool for roster consideration for Team USA's 2024 Olympic squad, Chris Haynes of Turner Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards headlined Team USA's roster at the 2023 FIBA World Cup 2023 alongside Tyrese Haliburton, Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges. Team USA announced an initial player pool of 41 candidates to trim from, but Edwards could be considered a likely candidate to return for the Paris Olympics.

2020
Edwards made significant improvements during his second season in the NBA. He increased his production defensively and as a passer, averaging 1.5 steals and 3.8 assists per game. His efficiency also leaped forward -- 44.1 percent from the field and 78.6 percent from the free-throw line. Plus, after shooting 32.9 percent from behind the arc during his rookie campaign, he improved to 35.7 percent last season. The result was a playoff run that seems to have invigorated the franchise. Edwards didn't slow down in the six-game series against the Grizzlies, where he averaged 25.2 points on 46/40/82 shooting, 4.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.2 blocks in 37.8 minutes. The Wolves continued to build up the roster around him, acquiring defensive-minded center Rudy Gobert from the Jazz. As far as fantasy goes, Gobert is a nice addition for Edwards in that he won't eat into his usage rate. Their other noteworthy addition was Kyle Anderson -- another player who doesn't look for his own shot often. Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns are the clear driving forces behind the Timberwolves' offensive attack, and fantasy managers should expect Edwards to continue improving during his third season. He's on an All-Star trajectory and will probably be a consistent pick in the second and third rounds of most fantasy drafts.
The Rookie of the Year runner-up, Edwards had a mostly encouraging debut season in Minnesota. The No. 1 overall pick ranked 98th in fantasy on a per-game basis -- a number that jumps up to 51st in total production since he played all 72 games in the shortened season. He actually started off slowly, which led to some minor panic, but he made steady improvement from late January onward and really took off in March. During Edwards' final 32 appearances, he averaged 23.3 points on 45/34/76 shooting, 5.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.1 combined steals-plus-blocks. That stretch included two 42-point performances against strong defenses in Phoenix and Memphis. He also ranked 20th in the league in total steals (82). If fantasy managers can put aside his worryingly inefficient start to his rookie season, Edwards profiles as a potential 20-point-per-game scorer in 2021-22 on passable efficiency. Considering the lack of scoring talent aside from Malik Beasley, D'Angelo Russell and Karl-Anthony Towns, Edwards will be relied upon heavily to generate buckets. While it's not quite a "big three" in Minnesota, Edwards is part of the core trio, and he has a good chance to emerge as the No. 2 guy above Russell.
Edwards has more question marks than the average top pick, but there's no doubt that he has the physical tools to become a star in the NBA. Edwards will presumably slide into the starting small forward spot in Minnesota, though there could be some positional overlap with Malik Beasley and D'Angelo Russell, especially with Ricky Rubio now at point guard. In 32 games at Georgia last year, Edwards averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.6 blocks while shooting 40.2 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from three. From a fantasy perspective, he should contribute mostly in the points category and rack up some rebounds, as well. The concern will be his overall efficiency and other peripheral stats.
