2019 Tournament PreviewThe Sun Devils, searching for their first NCAA Tournament victory since 2009, are somewhat difficult to size up entering the dance. Their NET ranking is just 63, despite three Quadrant 1 wins (Kansas, Mississippi State, Utah State) and an 8-3 record in Quadrant 2. KenPom's predictive measure seems to agree, ranking coach Bobby Hurley's squad 61st. ASU passes the eye test, however, with 6-4 freshman guard Luguentz Dort (16.1 ppg) and sophomore Remy Martin (13.4 ppg). But junior Rob Edwards (11.3 ppg) is the only reliable 3-pointer shooter at 39.4 percent, as ASU doesn't prosper much from distance (34.1 percent). The X-factor is San Diego State transfer Zylan Cheatham (11.8 ppg, 10.4 rpg), a 6-8 senior who averaged a double-double. He converts just 60 percent of his freebies, however. The team isn't much better at 67.1 percent (309th), though it at least gets to the line at a high rate (6th in FTA/FGA ratio), which could prove useful in the 11-seed play-in game in the West Region.
