Freeman decided Saturday to retire from football, Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette reports.

Freeman, who was in the midst of his first season in the Canadian Football League, made the choice to put an end to his career Saturday. The former first-round pick of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers was projected to be the backup to starter Drew Willy before the announcement. With his departure, the second-string duties will now likely fall to Matthew Shiltz.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Freeman agreed to a two-year deal with Montreal on Friday.

The former NFL quarterback will embark upon a career in the CFL after flirting with the league, and the Alouettes, in 2017. His most recent appearance on the field came with the Indianapolis Colts in 2015, where Freeman started one game for the injured Andrew Luck, completing 15 of 28 passes for 149 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He hasn't been a regular starter since his time in Tampa Bay from 2009-2012, but will have an opportunity to jump right in and compete for the gig with Montreal for this upcoming season. At this point, Darian Durant is the incumbent starter, but struggled throughout this past season, and missed a chunk of time near the end of the year due to a knee injury.
