Stacy was released from the Roughriders on Monday, Ian Hamilton of reports.

Originally moved to the practice roster following official rosters being named over the weekend, Stacy has been cut and is now a free agent. The former NFL back is trying to make a return to professional football after retiring in 2015 due to a broken ankle. Given his time away from the game, Stacy could have trouble finding a new home to try and shake the rust off.

Stacy was moved to the practice roster Sunday.

With Tre Mason earning the international spot at running back for the team, Stacy will be moved to the practice roster for the time being. Both backs have NFL experience, but Mason was able to better establish himself in camp and will compete for playing time once games begin. Stacy will likely have a chance at some point this year to move to the active roster and receive some carries.

Stacy signed a contract with the Roughriders on Sunday.

Stacy previously played in the NFL from 2013 to 2015, spending two seasons with the Rams and one with the Jets. Over that three-year span, Stacy tallied 1,355 yards on 357 carries and added nine touchdowns. He'll now have the opportunity to extend his playing career in the CFL and he should have a chance at making the Roughriders' roster after fellow running back Cameron Marshall was released Sunday.
