RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam signed a one-year contract with the Roughriders on Wednesday, 3downnation.com reports.

Messam put together a pair of solid campaigns with Calgary in recent years, topping 1,000 yards on the ground in both seasons while combining for 21 total touchdowns. He did spend two years with the Roughriders in 2014-15, but wasn't able to secure a regular role with the team. Looking ahead, he will compete with Cameron Marshall and Trent Richardson in the Saskatchewan backfield, but should be able to carve out a solid role this time around.

October 28, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried eight times for 35 yards and posted one reception for 15 yards in Saturday's 29-20 loss to the Eskimos.

With the Stampeders falling behind by a 23-13 margin midway through the third quarter, Messam was largely factored out of the contest. The veteran tailback has seen a significant downturn in production over the last three weeks, logging 25 carries for 89 yards combined over that span. Game script has limited him to single-digit carry totals twice during that stretch, partly explaining the dip. He'll look to finish the season strong against the Blue Bombers in Week 20.

October 21, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 11 times for 43 yards and added two catches for 12 yards in Friday's 30-7 loss to the Roughriders.

The Stamps' offense has hit a rough patch, and it's taken Messam's production with it. The 12 receiving yards were his highest total in six games, while the veteran back hasn't gotten into the end zone in the last five contests. He's still only 49 rushing yards and one TD away from his second straight campaign with 1,000 yards and 10 scores, but with only two games left on the schedule before the playoffs, he and the Calgary attack are running out of time to turn things around.

October 13, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam (undisclosed) rushed six times for 11 yards in Friday's 28-25 win over the Tiger-Cats.

Making his return from a one-game absence, Messam struggled to his second-lowest rushing total of the season. The 32-year-old tailback had averaged well over 5.0 yards per rush in each of his prior three contests, so Friday's 1.8 yards per tote was certainly a disappointment. Given his successes this season, the significant drop in production could safely be considered an outlier, one he'll look to bounce back from when Calgary tangles with the Roughriders in Week 18.

October 12, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam (undisclosed) was added to the active roster for Friday's game against Hamilton, The Calgary Sun's Danny Austin reports.

Messam missed Calgary's previous game against the Alouettes on Sept. 29, but will return to the fold for Week 17 after going through practices without any sort of setback. He is listed as the No. 1 running back on the depth chart, so expect a decent workload for Messam against the Tiger-Cats.

September 28, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam was placed on the one-game injured list due to an undisclosed injury ahead of Friday's game against the Alouettes.

Messam recently returned from a neck injury and put up 127 yards rushing on 23 carries, but it's unclear as to whether it's the same injury he is dealing with this week. Terry Williams will get the start at running back in Messam's absence.

September 24, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam (neck) carried 23 times for 127 yards and added three receptions for eight yards in Sunday's 15-9 win over the Roughriders.

Messam bounced back from Week 13's early exit by posting his best rushing yardage total since Week 5, and his second-highest tally of the campaign overall. The veteran running back carried a significant load of the offense in the win, with quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell generating modest production through the air. Messam appears to be back at full health and needs 302 yards over the balance of the campaign to eclipse the career-best 1,198 yards he posted last season.

September 23, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam (neck) is listed as the starting running back for Sunday's game against the Roughriders.

Messam's Week 13 production was impacted by his injury, but it appears he will be able to get back on the field without missing any additional action. He had his best game of the season last time he faced Saskatchewan, running for 135 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries.

September 20, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

After being examined following his exit from last week's victory over the Lions, Messam has been diagnosed with a neck injury.

The good news for Messam and those hoping to use him in this week's fantasy lineups is that he did not suffer a concussion, so he seemingly will not have to be cleared of symptoms in order to take the field this week. However, given that he is dealing with an injury in the head area, the Stampeders still figure to be cautious with him, so it's too early to tell if he will play in Week 14.

September 16, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam suffered an undisclosed injury and is doubtful to return to Saturday's game against British Columbia.

Messam got off to a good start Saturday, rushing seven times for 40 yards before leaving the game.

September 11, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried nine times for 48 yards and logged one reception for six yards in Saturday's 25-22 win over the Eskimos.

Messam averaged 5.3 yards per carry but saw his opportunities limited, as his nine carries and rushing yardage total were both his lowest since Week 4. The 32-year-old has tallied at least 11 totes and 51 yards in every other game outside of those two contests, so Saturday's reduced output was more of a function of the game script than anything else. He'll look to get back on track against the Lions in Week 13.

September 4, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 13 times for 61 yards and two touchdowns in Monday's 39-18 win over Edmonton.

He now has an incredible nine rushing TDs in 10 games, after leading the CFL with 11 in 18 games last season. Messam remains arguably the most consistent fantasy performer in the CFL, especially with opposition defenses working harder to keep Bo Levi Mitchell and the Stamps passing game from beating them.

August 27, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 14 times for 62 yards and added six catches for 29 yards in Saturday's 23-7 win over the Argos.

It's the first time since Week 4 that Messam hasn't gotten into the end zone, but the six receptions were a season high and helped soften the fantasy blow. The 32-year-old continues to lead the CFL in rushing yards (621) despite the fact that he doesn't have a run longer than 28 yards this season -- depending on your perspective, that's either a sign he's losing a step as he gets older, or that he's in line for an explosive second half once he starts breaking off some bigger gains.

August 25, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam (knee) will play in Saturday's game against the Argonauts.

Messam was forced to leave last week's game with a knee injury, but it ended up being a minor one, as he managed to return to practice Wednesday without suffering another setback. Messam will assume his role as the Stampeders' starting running back.

August 23, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam (knee) took part in Wednesday's practice, Kristen Odland of Postmedia reports.

Messam injured his knee last week and was forced from the game, according to the Calgary Sun, but the setback was believed to be minor, and that appears to be the case. As of now, it seems Messam is on track to play in Saturday's game against the Argonauts.

August 19, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 15 times for 69 yards and a touchdown in Friday's 21-17 win over the Lions.

On a night when neither offense could get much going, Messam's TD to begin the fourth quarter proved to be the decisive score. He now leads the CFL in both rushing yards (559) and rushing TDs (seven), and Friday's performance put him over 5,000 rushing yards for his career.

August 3, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 10 times for 76 yards and a touchdown while adding two catches for 14 yards in Thursday's 41-24 win over the Argos.

The 32-year-old has a career year in 2016, but Messam is on pace to top that performance this season, rushing for 490 yards and six TDs (leading the CFL in both categories) through seven games.

July 30, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam gained 91 yards and scored three touchdowns on 11 rushes in Saturday's 60-1 win over the Ti-Cats. He also gained three yards on his sole reception.

Messam posted a pair of short touchdowns in the first half following long receptions by Marken Michel that put the Stamps' offense within the shadow of the goal line. The veteran tailback had come into Saturday with only two rushing scores on the season, and his output represented his first multi-touchdown effort since Week 11 of 2016. Messam is clearly a focal point of the prolific Calgary attack, and as demonstrated Saturday, the team's high-octane passing game can sometimes set him up for some gimmee touchdowns. He'll look to play a prominent role once again in a Week 7 battle against the Argos.

July 22, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam totaled 135 yards and scored a touchdown on 28 carries in Saturday's 27-10 win over the Riders. He also lost a yard on his sole reception.

Fresh off a Week 4 ejection against the Als, Messam was well-rested and on a mission Saturday, logging a season-high 28 carries and scoring a key fourth-quarter touchdown to seal the victory. The workhorse back also notched his first 100-yard rushing day since Week 18 of last season and is averaging a robust 15 carries per game over the first five contests. Given his undisputed role as the Stamps' lead back, Messam is one of the premier fantasy options at running back each week.

July 14, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam was ejected from Friday's 30-23 loss to the Alouettes after his fumble was returned for a touchdown in the second quarter and he subsequently got into an altercation with a Montreal player in the end zone.

Frustration got the better of the Calgary running back on the play, and his absence in the second half threw the team's normally potent offense out of whack. Messam finished with a disappointing four carries for one yard plus two catches for 18 yards, but assuming he doesn't face any additional discipline from the league he should be able to put up much better numbers in Week 5 at home against Saskatchewan.

July 8, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 17 times for 71 yards and added two catches for 27 yards in Friday's 29-10 win over the Blue Bombers.

The 32-year-old continues to produce as part of the CFL's most dangerous offense, and Messam is now averaging 86 yards from scrimmage through the first three games in 2017. He's only found the end zone once so far, but it's only a matter of time until his TDs start piling up given that he scored 12 in 18 games last season.

June 30, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam compiled 51 yards on 14 rushes and added 25 yards on two receptions in Thursday's 43-39 win over the Redblacks.

While the passing game was responsible for all three touchdowns, it was Messam who helped ice the game on the final drive and allowed the Stamps play keep-away from a hot Redblacks offense. The veteran running back ripped off consecutive runs of eight, two, six and seven yards to force Ottawa to use their final timeout, enabling quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell to eventually take two consecutive knees to run out the clock. Messam has started 2017 in typically efficient fashion, grinding out 116 yards on 4.3 yards per carry and adding 44 yards on seven receptions. He'll look to continue his strong play against the Blue Bombers in Week 3.

June 23, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 13 times for 65 yards and a touchdown while catching five passes for 19 yards in Friday's 31-31 tie with the Redblacks.

He saved his best work for last, banging out a game-high 19-yard run late in the fourth quarter before scoring on the three-yard plunge to cap the drive and send the game into overtime. Messam ran for a career-high 1,198 yards and 11 TDs last season, and as the lead back in a potent Calgary attack he should once again be among the CFL's most productive RBs in 2017.

June 19, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam will open the season as the Stampeders' top running back for the second straight year, according to the Calgary Herald.

It comes as no surprise that Messam will start Week 1 after leading the CFL in both rushing yards (1,198) and rushing touchdowns (11) a year ago, but this report simply confirms the fact. 2017 will be Messam's age-32 season and he did record a career-high 206 attempts a year ago, but he has not shown any signs of slowing down yet.

November 28, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball eight times for 35 yards and caught six passes for 59 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 39-33 loss to Ottawa in the 104th Grey Cup.

The CFL's rushing leader this season was productive as always, even though the Stamps fell into an early hole that forced them to get away from their running game. Messam had a career year in 2016, and even if Calgary's offense remains as potent next season, the 31-year-old RB could have trouble duplicating this year's production.

November 21, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 14 times for 84 yards while adding two catches for 12 yards in Sunday's 42-15 win over the Lions in the Western Final.

The Stamps got most of their offense through Bo Levi Mitchell's arm Sunday, but Messam was still able to pick up close to 100 yards from scrimmage. The CFL's regular season rushing leader will look for one more big performance Sunday against Ottawa in the 104th Grey Cup.

October 22, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 10 times for 111 yards in Friday's win over the Argos.

He also caught one pass for seven yards. Messam has now put plenty of distance between himself and the field in the race for the CFL rushing title, crossing the 1100-yard mark Friday while no other back has even reached 900 yet. he'll look to pad his numbers further in the Stamps' next game, Oct. 30 in Montreal.

October 11, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam gained 133 yards and scored a touchdown on 17 carries while adding 20 yards on his sole reception in Monday's 48-20 victory over the Argos. He also lost a fumble and scored a two-point conversion.

The bruising tailback run through the Argos in his first 100-yard performance since Week 11 versus the Eskimos, while also scoring a touchdown for the fourth straight game and ninth time in the last 10 contests overall. Messam now sits just 56 yards shy of eclipsing the career-best 1,057 yards he tallied in Edmonton back in 2011, while his 11 touchdowns are easily a career high. With a vital role in the Stamps attack that's exemplified by double-digit carries in seven of his last eight games, Messam continues to be a must-start at the sometimes fickle RB position each week.

October 2, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam (concussion) tallied 59 yards on nine carries and added 43 yards on four catches in Saturday's 36-17 victory over the Ti-Cats.

Despite spending part of the week in the concussion protocol, Messam took the field and turned in one of his typically solid performances. He contributed significantly through both the ground and air, scoring on a one-yard run in the third quarter, his third straight game with a rushing touchdown. Messam's four catches represented his highest total in that category since Week 12, while his 43 receiving yards represented his best performance through the air since Week 11 against the Eskimos.

October 1, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam (concussion) is not listed among the Stampeders' scratches for Saturday's game against the Tiger-Cats and will start at running back.

Messam spent some of the last week in concussion protocol and could have been scratched Saturday if needed, but he was apparently cleared of any symptoms, and is good to go for Week 15.

September 30, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam (concussion) is listed as the starting running back on the depth chart for Saturday's game against the Tiger-Cats.

Messam's listing on the depth chart bodes well for his chances of playing Saturday, but he was entered into the concussion protocol earlier this week, so he will have to be cleared of any symptoms on game day in order to take the field. Messam figures to receive a full workload if he plays Saturday, but Tory Harrison is next in line in the event Messam is unable to go.

September 28, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam is going through concussion protocol and is questionable for Saturday's game against the Tiger-Cats.

It is unclear when Messam sustained the injury. There will likely be more updates released on his status closer to game time. Tory Harrison would benefit the most from his absence if he cannot play.

September 25, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam gained 71 yards and scored a touchdown on 12 carries while adding 12 yards on three catches in Saturday's 36-34 win over the Blue Bombers.

The stalwart running back would likely have been in for another one of his trademark prolific performances if the Stamps had managed to hold on to their robust first-half lead, but was forced into the background once the Blue Bombers began cutting into their deficit. Messam still managed to score on the ground for the seventh time in the last eight games and also supplied his highest yardage total since Week 11 versus the Eskimos. Following Saturday's production, Messam is just 17 yards away from eclipsing the second-best rushing yardage total of his career, while his nine rushing touchdowns are a new high-water mark.

September 18, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam totaled 35 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and added 37 yards on two receptions in Saturday's 48-23 victory over the Redblacks.

Messam didn't need to do much in what turned out to be a blowout win, but still found his way into the end zone for a career-high eighth time on the season. The veteran back has also scored in six of his last seven contests and has at least two receptions in each of the last four weeks as well.

September 11, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam totaled 52 yards on 11 carries and added 28 yards on four receptions in Saturday's 34-28 overtime victory over the Eskimos.

Just five days after decimating this same squad for 110 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, Messam came back with a solid albeit unspectacular effort Saturday. The passing game became more of a focal point with the high-scoring affair, so Messam's opportunities on the ground were somewhat capped. However, as evidenced by his production last Monday, he's capable of serving as a valuable fantasy asset on any given week.

September 6, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 18 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns while catching six passes for 49 yards in Monday's win over the Eskimos.

He padded his league lead with his sixth and seventh rushing TDs of the season (no one else has more than four) and Messam now sits just three yards shy of Winnipeg's Andrew Harris for the CFL rushing lead as well. The Stamps offense is firing on all cylinders this year, and Messam has been a huge part of their success. He'll get another crack at the Eskimos' run defense Saturday in Edmonton.

August 29, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 14 times for 46 yards and a touchdown while adding five catches for 44 yards in Sunday's win over the Tiger-Cats.

He's now recorded a rushing TD in four straight games to give him a CFL-leading five on the season while Messam's 542 rushing yards puts him second to Winnipeg's Andrew Harris for the league lead in that category.

August 20, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 15 times for 65 yards and a touchdown in Friday's win over the Lions.

He wasn't as productive as usual through the air, catching just one pass for three yards, but the rushing TD was Messam's CFL-leading fourth and marked the third straight game in which he'd run for a score.

August 14, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam ran the ball seven times for 27 yards and a touchdown while adding three catches for 86 yards in Saturday's win over the Roughriders.

It's the third time this season Messam's recorded 100 or more combined yards in a game, and his three rushing TDs on the year puts him in a tie for the CFL lead. His night could have been even better, but he fumbled at the end of a 63-yard reception after trying to make one move too many to get to the end zone. Expect Messam to put up big numbers again Friday against the Lions.

August 5, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 17 times for 109 yards and a touchdown while adding five catches for 36 yards in Thursday's win over the Roughriders.

He's currently the CFL's rushing leader with 404 yards through six games but Messam has also added plenty of value through the air, catching 20 passes for 142 yards and a TD. With Calgary's offense firing on all cylinders right now, he should continue putting up very strong numbers.

July 30, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball six times for 45 yards while catching six passes for 44 yards in Friday's overtime win over the Lions.

The running games for both teams were mostly an afterthought in the 44-41 shootout, but Messam was still able to be productive in his limited touches. The 31-year-old CFL veteran has been steady but not explosive through the first five games of the year, compiling 295 rushing yards and 106 receiving yards with one TD on the ground and one through the air.

July 22, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 13 times for 65 yards while adding four catches for 30 yards in Thursday's win over the Blue Bombers.

He continues to post solid if unspectacular numbers as Calgary's lead back, posting 250 rushing and 62 receiving yards through four games with one receiving TD, but the fact that Messam is a Toronto native is a huge boon to the team's roster flexibility given the CFL's rules limiting non-Canadian players. His starting job, and fantasy value, is secure.

July 9, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam ran the ball eight times for 32 yards but also caught four passes for 24 yards and a touchdown in Friday's 26-26 tie with the Redblacks.

The fourth-quarter TD not only salvaged Messam's fantasy line, it also sent the game into overtime and helped the Stampeders avoid a loss. The 31-year-old running back now has 217 combined yards and two scores through three games as Calgary's lead option in the backfield.

July 2, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam carried the ball 16 times for 137 yards in Friday's win over the Blue Bombers.

He didn't get into the end zone, but that's about the only complaint anyone can muster about Messam's performance. Even if you toss out his longest run, a 53-yard scamper midway through the third quarter, he still averaged 5.6 yards a carry. Don't expect a repeat next week however, as Calgary faces a much tougher test when they head east to Ottawa.

June 26, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam was limited on the ground in Saturday's 20-18 loss to the Lions, gaining 16 yards on only seven carries, and adding a rushing touchdown. He also totaled eight yards on his sole reception.

The veteran tailback had an unremarkable return to the Stamps after a one-year sabbatical in Saskatchewan, receiving limited chances to carry the load. Messam certainly proved capable of much more with his extended opportunity for the Roughriders last season, averaging 6.1 yards per carry and totaling 826 yards and two rushing touchdowns, while adding 464 yards on 47 receptions. Considering his return to Calgary was for a presumed feature back role, look for the Canadian national to be given much more run as the season unfolds and he acclimates to the team's offensive system.

June 18, 2016

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Messam gained 42 yards on five carries and added 11 yards and a touchdown on his sole reception in Friday's 31-21 preseason victory over the BC Lions.

The veteran back, traded to the Stamps late last season from the Roughriders, was encouragingly productive in the final tune-up for the regular season. Messam hauled in starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell's 11-yard pass for a score in the first quarter for his only catch, and ate up chunks of real estate on the ground at a clip of 8.4 yards per carry as well. After a 2015 campaign that saw him tally a total of 1,503 yards from scrimmage and average a CFL-best 6.2 yards per tote as one of the league's three 1,000-yard rushers, Messam looks ready to turn in another All-Star caliber effort in the coming season.
