Week 6 In Review: The Biggest News From Week 6

This article is part of our Week In Review series.

ACC

Russell Wilson continues to turn it over a bit much for North Carolina State, but the star quarterback was solid yet again as he threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns while running for 45 yards against Boston College.

But Wilson was outdone by Virginia Tech's Tyrod Taylor in Week 6 as Taylor threw for 161 yards and a touchdown while running for 127 yards and two touchdowns against Central Michigan. That's Taylor's second huge week in a row.

It was generally a good week for ACC runners. Florida State's Chris Thompson and Jermaine Thomas combined for 270 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns during a beat-down of Miami (FL). Damien Berry totaled 101 ground yards and a score for the Hurricanes in that same game. Meanwhile, both North Carolina's Johnny White and Georgia Tech's Anthony Allen went berserk, respectively posting 29 and 37 fantasy points in standard scoring.

Big 12

Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon might be the most valuable player in college fantasy football right now, as his 190-yard, two-touchdown performance against Louisiana-Lafayette gave him 11 touchdowns through five games. Brandon Weeden has had lots of success throwing to Blackmon, but he threw three touchdowns to other players in Week 6, giving him 18 passing touchdowns on the year.

Three other quarterbacks had huge performances in Week 6. Taylor Martinez continues to boggle the mind in Nebraska, as he ran for 241 yards and four touchdowns while throwing for 128 yards and another touchdown against Kansas State.

Three other quarterbacks had huge performances in Week 6. Taylor Martinez continues to boggle the mind in Nebraska, as he ran for 241 yards and four touchdowns while throwing for 128 yards and another touchdown against Kansas State. Baylor's Robert Griffin threw 384 yards and two touchdowns against Texas Tech while running for 18 yards and another two touchdowns. The victor in that contest, however, was Taylor Potts of the Red Raiders, who threw for 462 yards and four touchdowns.

One glaring absence from the list of standout Big 12 quarterbacks is Texas A&M's Jerrod Johnson, who completed just 37.5 percent of his passes for 212 yards, one touchdown and one interception against Arkansas. One has to wonder if Johnson will see the bench soon, because he's been a trainwreck for three weeks straight.

Big East

Louisville was the fantasy powerhouse of the conference in Week 6, as Adam Froman (235 yards, four touchdowns passing) and Bilal Powell (204 yards, two touchdowns rushing) both lit up the scoreboard.

The Pittsburgh offense was less fruitful for fantasy owners, as Dion Lewis and Ray Graham split carries against Notre Dame. At least star wideout Jon Baldwin got back on track, catching nine passes for 111 yards and a touchdown in the game.

Elsewhere, true freshman quarterback Chas Dodd and West Virginia wideout Brad Starks both posted big numbers out of nowhere, with Dodd throwing for 322 yards and two touchdowns against Connecticut while Starks caught four passes for 100 yards and three touchdowns against UNLV.

Big Ten

Denard Robinson finally hit a speed bump in Week 6, as Michigan State held him to 84 yards rushing while totaling more interceptions (three) than touchdowns allowed (two). Things might only get more difficult for Robinson against Iowa.

John Clay owners were happy enough to see his total of 111 yards and three touchdowns rushing against Minnesota, but true freshman James White continues to make jaws drop as he ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns in the same game. An upcoming match against the Buckeyes will be a difficult test for the duo.

While the entire Indiana offense hit a brick wall against Ohio State, quarterback Terrelle Pryor kept rolling despite a minor quadriceps injury, making 334 passing yards and three touchdowns look easy against the Hoosiers.

Conference USA

Southern Mississippi wideout DeAndre Brown and UTEP runner Donald Buckram continue to be two of the biggest busts in college fantasy football, though injuries are mostly to blame. Brown missed Saturday's shootout against East Carolina with a leg injury while Buckram played only a situational role against Rice due to a knee injury.

The SMU tandem of quarterback Kyle Padron and receiver Aldrick Robinson appear to have been wise investments for their owners, as both continue to stand out at their respective positions. Padron threw for 381 yards and three touchdowns against Tulsa, and Robinson caught five of those passes for 118 yards, giving him 539 yards and six touchdowns through six games.

An even better investment, however, would have been the UTEP tandem of quarterback Trevor Vittatoe and wideout Kris Adams. Vittatoe threw for 327 yards and three touchdowns against Rice, giving him 14 touchdown passes in the past six weeks. In that same game, Adams caught five passes for 134 yards and three touchdowns, giving him eight scores on the year.

Independents

Ricky Dobbs finally got on track for Navy against Wake Forest, rushing for 100 yards and two scores while throwing for two more touchdowns. If he keeps playing like that, it just might be enough to get his owners into the playoffs after an awful start to the season.
Army fullback Jared Hassin also had himself a big game in Week 6, tearing up Tulane for 144 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Hassin now has six touchdowns this year.

MAC

Western Michigan quarterback Alex Carder had the standout performance of the week for the MAC, as he threw for 265 yards and a touchdown while running for 66 yards and three more touchdowns against Ball State.

It's a shame that he doesn't play for a better team, but Toledo wideout Eric Page showed once again why he's one of the best, catching 11 passes for 120 yards against Boise State. Meanwhile, Bowling Green receiver Kamar Jorden got back on track against Ohio, catching eight passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

Temple running back Bernard Pierce only saw three carries against Northern Illinois due to a high ankle sprain. Once again his backup, Matt Brown, took advantage of the situation by running for 93 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

The Kent State DST also deserves props, as they annihilated the Akron offense. Although they allowed 17 points, the Golden Flashes totaled seven sacks, two fumble recoveries, three interceptions and two touchdowns in the game.

MWC

The distinction of being the top Air Force runner in any given week always seems to be changing hands, but it was Asher Clark who played the role against Colorado State, running for 125 yards and a touchdown. In that same game, Leonard Mason broke out for the Rams, going for 139 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

BYU's J.J. Di Luigi might be one of the nation's more underrated running backs, as he kept rolling against San Diego State. He totaled 157 yards from scrimmage in the victory and scored once.

In the same game, San Diego State wideout Vincent Brown had his second promising performance in a row, catching six passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, his teammate and emerging star running back, Ronnie Hillman, was given just 11 carries in the loss, though he turned it into 62 yards.

Nevada running back Vai Taua was once again out of this world, as he ran for 196 yards and three touchdowns on just 16 carries against San Jose State.

Pac-10

If Kyle Prater and Markeith Ambles are anywhere near as good as Robert Woods, then USC's 2010 wideout recruiting class could go down as one of the best ever. The true freshman scorched Stanford for 12 catches, 224 yards and three touchdowns.

Stepfan Taylor has quietly made everyone at Stanford forget about Toby Gerhart, as he ran for 104 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries against USC--his third game in a row running for over 100 yards. However, it continues to be his star quarterback, Andrew Luck, who leads the offense. Luck threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns in the victory, adding another 40 yards on the ground.

Meanwhile, Oregon running back LaMichael James continues to gain ground in the Heisman race, as he totaled 223 yards from scrimmage and scored three times against Washington State. His teammate and emerging star at quarterback, Darron Thomas, left the game with a shoulder injury but should be fine to play after the bye week.

California's Shane Vereen also had a huge week at running back, running for 151 yards and two touchdowns against UCLA while adding 51 yards as a pass-catcher.

The conference faced some very unfortunate news when Oregon State wideout James Rodgers left Saturday's game against Arizona with what could be a season-ending knee injury. He had seven catches for 102 yards and a touchdown before leaving.

SEC

The biggest news of the week is far and away South Carolina's huge upset over the formerly top-ranked Crimson Tide. Quarterback Stephen Garcia (17-of-20 for 201 yards, three touchdowns and one interception), running back Marcus Lattimore (109 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns) and receiver Alshon Jeffery (seven catches for 127 yards and two touchdowns) were all brilliant in the win.

The running back tandem of Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson was less brilliant for Alabama, totaling just 92 yards from scrimmage between the two.

Forget jack of all trades—Kentucky's Randall Cobb was an ace of all trades against Auburn, throwing one touchdown, running for two more, and scoring a fourth time while adding 68 yards as a pass-catcher.

Unfortunately for Cobb and the Wildcats, Auburn's Cameron Newton was able to lead a slightly more potent offense in Auburn's 37-34 victory, as he passed for 210 yards while running for 198 yards and four touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Mississippi State's Vick Ballard ran for three touchdowns for the second week straight, giving him 12 touchdowns this year on just 59 carries.

Sun Belt

The return from suspension wasn't quite as glorious as Middle Tennessee's Dwight Dasher would have hoped, as he totaled just 199 yards of total offense and two touchdowns in his team's blowout loss to Troy.

With his team down to its No. 4 quarterback, North Texas running back Lance Dunbar did his best to single-handedly win Saturday's game against Arkansas State. Unfortunately for him, his touchdown and 105 yards rushing on 30 carries wasn't enough to outpace Arkansas State and quarterback Ryan Aplin, who rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another.

Although his team fell short against Louisiana-Monroe, Florida Atlantic's Alfred Morris showed why he's one of the better running backs in the country. Despite getting no help from his passing game, Morris took 30 carries for 153 yards and two touchdowns against the Warhawks. After starting the year with a rough schedule, it looks like Morris may be ready to catch fire.

WAC

Someone finally found a way to slow down Kealoha Pilares. Unfortunately for Fresno State, they did so at the expense of containing Greg Salas, who burned the Bulldogs for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Hawaii was surprisingly run-heavy in the game, and Alex Green made 96 yards and three touchdowns out of it.

In the same contest, Fresno quarterback Ryan Colburn struggled badly, completing just 19-of-37 passes for 258 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

Although Boise State ran for over 200 yards against Toledo, most fantasy owners were burned by the fact that those yards were distributed between nine different runners. Owners who started Jeremy Avery were more than happy, however, as he totaled 68 yards from scrimmage while scoring three times.
