Weekly Rankings: Week 4 Value Meter

Weekly Rankings: Week 4 Value Meter

This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

Sunday Update complete.

Bye Week: Carolina, Washington

Here are my rankings (if you want a second opinion, please see our formula-based projections - these are not tied into my rankings at all) for the coming week at each position to help you decide your starting lineup. Our rankings are based on the following scoring system: four points for a passing touchdown; six points for a rushing/receiving touchdown; one point for every 20 passing yards; and one point for every 10 rushing/receiving yards. Most importantly, the default rankings are now for PPR leagues.

**** PLEASE READ: Times change, and with them, so do I, even if I go kicking and screaming into the good night. The vast majority of the fantasy football universe plays with some form of PPR -whether it's a full point or 1/2 point. ESPN's default is full-point PPR, Yahoo's is .5 PPR. The DFS games for the vast majority are either half or full point PPR. I'm sympathetic to those of you who would prefer standard rankings, so please, feel free to ask your questions in the comments regarding how a player might change in a standard scoring league. ****

***PLEASE READ, PART II - The masses (ok, the not-so-silent minority) have spoken, and you really want more representation for standard leagues too, so the Flex Rankings are now Standard scoring.***

Typically, this article will be posted on Tuesday evenings. ***These are not draft rankings. They are solely for the given week of the season.***

I will update these during the week, usually twice per week to account for injury or other news during practice. The timing of those updates will vary based on the news at hand and my schedule for the given week. But the first of those updates usually won't happen until Thursday. At any rate, I will post a "last updated" note at the top of the article, or an "update in progress" note if it's while I'm doing it. If there is no such note, that means it's my first pass at the rankings for this current week.

By all means, if you want to discuss a rank, or want me to add a player, chime in on the comments. I try to be receptive to your feedback and try to respond to most comments, though on occasion the volume can be quite thick. This first week in particular, but in other weeks as well, I will change ranks according to injuries and sometimes even a change of heart. Please refer to the rankings first when asking "should I start Player A vs. Player B?". And then refer to the rankings again before asking a generic starting decision question. If you really desire a response to a starting question that doesn't have added complexity, please use our Ask An Expert service - it comes with your subscription. Otherwise, my response will correspond with the rankings. If I rank one player before another, that's how I plan on making my starting decisions.

Quarterback

1.Drew Brees NO at NYG
2.Matt Ryan ATL vs. Cin
3.Patrick Mahomes KC at Den
4.Jared Goff LA vs. Min
5.Philip Rivers LAC vs. SF
6.Ben Roethlisberger PIT vs. Bal
7.*Aaron Rodgers GB vs. Buf
Note: Gutting it out - appeared to hurt his right hamstring against the Redskins, though he later denied that he suffered a subsequent injury. Limited practice Thursday - expect this to be a near-evergreen status this season. ***Logged a limited practice Thursday, but did more than he had done the previous two weeks on the Thursday practice.***
8.Deshaun Watson HOU at Ind
9.Kirk Cousins MIN at LAR
10.Russell Wilson SEA at Ari
11.Andy Dalton CIN at Atl
12.Tom Brady NE vs. Mia
Note: Back to back impotent games - this one surprisingly against the previously pliable Lions.
13.Case Keenum DEN vs. KC
14.*Ryan Fitzpatrick TB at Chi
Note: Jameis Winston is eligible to return this week, but it's not yet certain whether it'll be Fitzpatrick or Winston at the helm. If the decision would have been made at halftime last night, it would have spelled trouble for Fitzpatrick. Coach Dirk Koetter has said he has decided who will start, but won't reveal it for competitive reasons. However, Fitzpatrick got the majority of first-team snaps in practice so far this week. ***Still expected to get the start, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.***
15.Eli Manning NYG vs. NO
Note: Big bounce-back game against the Texans, though he still got sacked four times.
16.Carson Wentz PHI at Ten
17.Ryan Tannehill MIA at NE
18.Joe Flacco BAL at Pit
19.Matthew Stafford DET at Dal
20.*Baker Mayfield CLE at Oak
Note: Taking over the starting gig for the Browns.
21.Blake Bortles JAC vs. NYJ
Note: Horrible game - he didn't take any shots downfield against the Titans.
22.*Andrew Luck IND vs. Hou
Note: Didn't throw the final Hail Mary, deferring instead to Jacoby Brissett's stronger arm - after the game, the Colts insisted that nothing is wrong with Luck's health.
23.*Marcus Mariota TEN vs. Phi
Note: Led the Titans to a win at Jacksonville after Blaine Gabbert suffered a concussion. Mariota isn't all the way back health-wise, but it's likely he takes back over this week - that said, coach Mike Vrabel said that there are some throws that Mariota can't make yet. The Titans added Austin Davis as a third quarterback just in case. Named the starter for this week, while Gabbert remains in the concussion protocol. ***Has made enough progress that more of the playbook should be available to him.***
24.Derek Carr OAK vs. Cle
25.Mitchell Trubisky CHI vs. TB
26.Josh Allen BUF at GB
27.Dak Prescott DAL vs. Det
28.*C.J. Beathard SF at LAC
Note: Starting with Jimmy Garoppolo out for the season. Nick Mullens is the backup.
29.*Josh Rosen ARZ vs. Sea
Note: Taking over as the starter for the Cardinals.
30.Sam Darnold NYJ at Jax
31.Lamar Jackson BAL at Pit
32.*Tyrod Taylor CLE at Oak
Note: Suffered a concussion, which led to Baker Mayfield rallying the Browns on Thursday night and taking over the starting job. He has cleared the concussion protocol, so it appears he'll be available as the backup, at least.
33.*Blaine Gabbert TEN vs. Phi
Note: Left with a concussion in the first quarter last week. Remains in the concussion protocol.
34.*Sam Bradford ARZ vs. Sea
Note: Benched for Josh Rosen.
35.*Jimmy Garoppolo SF at LAC
Note: Torn ACL, out for the season.

Running Backs

1.Todd Gurley LA vs. Min
2.Melvin Gordon LAC vs. SF

5.Saquon Barkley NYG vs. NO
6.Kareem Hunt KC at Den
7.Tevin Coleman ATL vs. Cin
8.*Leonard Fournette JAC vs. NYJ
Note: (Hamstring) Still day-to-day. Limited practice Wednesday, expected to increase practice activity on Thursday. ***Though officially listed as questionable, Fournette confidently expressed his expectation to play Sunday. ***
9.James Conner PIT vs. Bal
Note: Two big runs late in the fourth quarter salvaged an otherwise frustrating game for Conner on Monday night.
10.David Johnson ARZ vs. Sea
11.Carlos Hyde CLE at Oak
12.Jordan Howard CHI vs. TB
13.*Giovani Bernard CIN at Atl
Note: (Thigh) Back-to-back limited practices this week - I love the matchup, but I worry some about the usage - I've moved him down three spots. ***Removed from the injury report.***
14.Kerryon Johnson DET at Dal
Note: Had the Lions' first 100-yard rushing game Sunday night since November 2013.
15.Lamar Miller HOU at Ind
16.Kenyan Drake MIA at NE
Note: Week 3 was a complete disaster - does the matchup against the Pats present a bounce back opportunity? I think it will, provided that Dolphins fall way behind early.
17.*Sony Michel NE vs. Mia
Note: Had 14 carries (compared to three for James White and none for Rex Burkhead) on Sunday night.
18.*Marshawn Lynch OAK vs. Cle
Note: (Shoulder) Limited practice Wednesday. ***No longer on the injury list.***
19.*Jay Ajayi PHI at Ten
Note: (Back) Expected to return for Week 4. Returned to full practice Thursday. ***Playing through a 'small fracture' in his back - it's a matter of pain tolerance. But he's been cleared to play this week.***
20.*Dalvin Cook MIN at LAR
Note: (Hamstring) Coach Mike Zimmer said there's a 'possibility' that Cook can go this week. He didn't practice Monday and it's unclear what he did Tuesday, though Cook said that the hamstring 'felt great.' Listed as questionable, though the team is optimistic that he'll play. This ranking assumes that he'll play and start. But make sure to check our latest news before kickoff.
21.Royce Freeman DEN vs. KC
22.James White NE vs. Mia
23.Isaiah Crowell NYJ at Jax
24.*Matt Breida SF at LAC
Note: Diagnosed with a hyper-extended knee in the loss to the Chiefs. Limited practice participant Wednesday - that's better than I expected after hearing about the initial injury. ***Called himself a game-time decision, pending warmups, but expected to play.***
25.Phillip Lindsay DEN vs. KC
26.Alex Collins BAL at Pit
27.Austin Ekeler LAC vs. SF
28.Theo Riddick DET at Dal
29.Peyton Barber TB at Chi
Note: Struggled to get going against the Steelers early, and then the game flow pretty much dictated a pass on nearly every play in the second half.
30.Dion Lewis TEN vs. Phi
31.Derrick Henry TEN vs. Phi
32.*Alfred Morris SF at LAC
Note: Injured his ankle in the loss to the Chiefs. Coach Kyle Shanahan downplayed the injury in his initial evaluation - practice reports will be important on this one. For now I view his injury less seriously than I do Breida's injury. Removed from the injury report. Meanwhile, Breida had a limited practice Wednesday. ***Expected to play barring a setback in warmups. Nonetheless I'm moving him down because it's now more likely that Breida will also play.***
33.*LeSean McCoy BUF at GB
Note: (Ribs) Making 'some progress' on his rehab, according to coach Sean McDermott said on Monday. Limited practices Wednesday and Thursday - wearing a no-contact jersey in practice. He has said that he will play this weekend, though the coaching staff hasn't yet weighed in on that. ***Limited practice all week, expected to play.***
34.*Chris Carson SEA at Ari
Note: Had a whopping 32 carries against the Cowboys, compared to just three for Rashaad Penny. (Hip) Limited practice Wednesday. ***Game-time decision, though coach Pete Carroll expressed optimism that Carson would play.***
35.Aaron Jones GB vs. Buf
Note: True three-headed monster in Green Bay, and it doesn't look to change this week.
36.*T.J. Yeldon JAC vs. NYJ
Note: Played through his ankle injury in the loss to the Titans, still dealing with some pain. Did not practice Wednesday, expected back at Thursday's practice. ***Full practice Friday, good to go.***
37.Jamaal Williams GB vs. Buf
38.Nyheim Hines IND vs. Hou
39.Bilal Powell NYJ at Jax
40.Tarik Cohen CHI vs. TB
41.Javorius Allen BAL at Pit
Note: Stole a goal line carry from Collins again this week, and has also been involved in the passing game.
42.Latavius Murray MIN at LAR
43.*Wayne Gallman NYG vs. NO
Note: ***Role as the backup solidified with Jonathan Stewart going on IR.***
44.*Chris Ivory BUF at GB
Note: ***McCoy active after all.***
45.Corey Grant JAC vs. NYJ
46.Jordan Wilkins IND vs. Hou
47.Wendell Smallwood PHI at Ten
48.Duke Johnson CLE at Oak
49.Ito Smith ATL vs. Cin
Note: Had three catches for 41 yards, but might get more work this week against the Bengals, who really struggle against opposing RBs when Burfict is out. Dealing with a rib injury - had a no-contact jersey in practice Wednesday. ***Removed from the injury list.***
50.Jalen Richard OAK vs. Cle
51.Frank Gore MIA at NE
52.Jacquizz Rodgers TB at Chi
53.Rashaad Penny SEA at Ari
54.Ty Montgomery GB vs. Buf
55.Doug Martin OAK vs. Cle
56.Mark Walton CIN at Atl
57.LeGarrette Blount DET at Dal
58.Malcolm Brown LA vs. Min
59.Chase Edmonds ARZ vs. Sea
60.*Devontae Booker DEN vs. KC
Note: Involved on third down - he seems to be the preferred target in the passing game, though that issue isn't entirely clear because Lindsay got ejected in the second quarter last week.
61.Nick Chubb CLE at Oak
62.Thomas Rawls CIN at Atl
63.Mike Gillislee NO at NYG
64.Spencer Ware KC at Den

73.*Joe Mixon CIN at Atl
Note: (Knee) Not practicing yet, but reports that his knee is feeling a lot better. It looks optimistic for Week 5. ***Officially ruled out.***
74.*Devonta Freeman ATL vs. Cin
Note: (Knee) Not quite there in terms of being ready to take on contact in practice. ***Ruled out again this week.***
75.*Le'Veon Bell PIT vs. Bal
Note: Supposedly the Steelers are willing to listen to trade offers for Bell and have had some contact with the Jets.
76.*Rex Burkhead NE vs. Mia
Note: Left with a neck injury on Sunday night, was also clearly behind James White and Sony Michel in the pecking order. Placed on IR by the Pats.

56.*T.J. Yeldon JAC vs. NYJ
Note: Played through his ankle injury in the loss to the Titans, still dealing with some pain. Did not practice Wednesday, expected back at Thursday's practice. ***Full practice Friday, good to go.***
57.Royce Freeman DEN vs. KC
58.Isaiah Crowell NYJ at Jax
59.*Alfred Morris SF at LAC
Note: Injured his ankle in the loss to the Chiefs. Coach Kyle Shanahan downplayed the injury in his initial evaluation - practice reports will be important on this one. For now I view his injury less seriously than I do Breida's injury. Removed from the injury report. Meanwhile, Breida had a limited practice Wednesday. ***Expected to play barring a setback in warmups. Nonetheless I'm moving him down because it's now more likely that Breida will also play.***
60.Sterling Shepard NYG vs. NO
61.*Geronimo Allison GB vs. Buf
Note: ***Could get more volume should Randall Cobb miss the game, or even get limited snaps.***
62.*Chris Hogan NE vs. Mia
Note: Only four targets Sunday night, but was on the field for all 48 snaps for the Pats.
63.Kenny Stills MIA at NE
Note: Target volume declined against the Raiders with DeVante Parker returning, as the Dolphins now have five receivers getting work (Stills, Parker, Wilson, Grant and Amendola).
64.Sammy Watkins KC at Den
65.Latavius Murray MIN at LAR
66.Alex Collins BAL at Pit
67.*Chris Carson SEA at Ari
Note: Had a whopping 32 carries against the Cowboys, compared to just three for Rashaad Penny. (Hip) Limited practice Wednesday. ***Game-time decision, though coach Pete Carroll expressed optimism that Carson would play.***
68.Aaron Jones GB vs. Buf
Note: True three-headed monster in Green Bay, and it doesn't look to change this week.
69.Marvin Jones DET at Dal
70.*John Brown BAL at Pit
Note: Full practice Thursday after sitting out Wednesday.
71.Demaryius Thomas DEN vs. KC
72.O.J. Howard TB at Chi
73.*Eric Ebron IND vs. Hou
Note: (Shoulder, knee) Full practice Thursday. ***Jack Doyle ruled out again this week.***
74.James White NE vs. Mia

Note: (Quad) Returned to a limited practice on Wednesday.
78.Nelson Agholor PHI at Ten

88.Austin Ekeler LAC vs. SF
89.Bilal Powell NYJ at Jax
90.Tarik Cohen CHI vs. TB
91.Ito Smith ATL vs. Cin
Note: Had three catches for 41 yards, but might get more work this week against the Bengals, who really struggle against opposing RBs when Burfict is out. Dealing with a rib injury - had a no-contact jersey in practice Wednesday. ***Removed from the injury list.***
92.Kelvin Benjamin BUF at GB
93.Jordy Nelson OAK vs. Cle
94.Christian Kirk ARZ vs. Sea
95.Austin Hooper ATL vs. Cin
96.George Kittle SF at LAC
97.Wendell Smallwood PHI at Ten
98.*Josh Gordon NE vs. Mia
Note: (Hamstring) Remained limited at Wednesday's practice, but moving around better than last week. ***'Good chance' Gordon could play this week.***
99.*Alshon Jeffery PHI at Ten
Note: (Shoulder) Cleared for contact Wednesday, but sat out practice Thursday with an illness. ***Expected to play - the Eagles are more concerned about his illness/virus than his shoulder at this point.***
100.*Taywan Taylor TEN vs. Phi
Note: Good bump up with the release of Matthews.
101.*Larry Fitzgerald ARZ vs. Sea
Note: (Hamstring) Did not practice Wednesday, had a helmet on at the media present portion of practice Thursday. ***'Nowhere near 100 percent' with his hamstring - though he is expected to play.***

28.Stephen Hauschka BUF at GB
29.Jason Myers NYJ at Jax
30.Phil Dawson ARZ vs. Sea
31.*Mike Nugent OAK vs. Cle
Note: Out with a hip injury. The Raiders signed rookie Matt McCrane to fill in for Nugent. ***Placed on IR.***
32.Greg Zuerlein LA vs. Min

Defenses

1.Jacksonville Jaguars vs. NYJ
2.*Los Angeles Rams vs. Min
Note: Aqib Talib (ankle) is definitely out, and will require surgery; other starter Marcus Peters (calf) is a game-time decision. Talib was placed on IR to return. Peters had a limited practice Wednesday but appears less likely to play still.
3.Chicago Bears vs. TB
4.*Los Angeles Chargers vs. SF
Note: Joey Bosa (foot) remains out. Chargers get to benefit first from Jimmy G's injury.
5.Green Bay Packers vs. Buf
Note: Another week, another questionable roughing the passer on Clay Matthews - at least this one didn't decide the game (the Packers were still going to lose anyhow). Meanwhile, Muhammad Wilkerson is out for the season with an ankle injury. CB Kevin King (groin) was limited in Thursday's practice.
6.Philadelphia Eagles at Ten
7.Seattle Seahawks at Ari
8.Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Bal
9.Indianapolis Colts vs. Hou
Note: Rookie Darius Leonard had another monster game - it's possible that this Colts defense has graduated to a 'not bad' level.

12.New England Patriots vs. Mia

18.*Atlanta Falcons vs. Cin
Note: Ricardo Allen, the other starting safety for the Falcons, is now out for the season with an Achilles' tendon injury.
19.Houston Texans at Ind
20.*Miami Dolphins at NE
Note: William Hayes tore his ACL trying not to land on the quarterback in the midst of a sack.
21.Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Chi
22.Tennessee Titans vs. Phi
23.*New Orleans Saints at NYG
Note: The Saints can't find a reliable second corner - P.J. Williams continually got torched by Calvin Ridley last week. That could bode well for Sterling Shepard this week. Cameron Jordan (biceps) practiced fully Thursday.
24.*Kansas City Chiefs at Den
Note: Eric Berry (heel) still remains sidelined at practice.
25.Buffalo Bills at GB
26.*Denver Broncos vs. KC
Note: Adam Jones (hamstring) should return this week. He was badly missed against the Ravens.

Note: Preston Brown (ankle) appears ready to return after a full practice Thursday.
29.*New York Giants vs. NO
