Chris Jones

29-Year-Old Defensive TackleDT
Kansas City Chiefs
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Jones turned in arguably the best campaign of his career working on the interior of Kansas City's defensive line in 2022, matching a career high with 15.5 sacks while posting a season-best 44 tackles (30 solo). Jones is entering his age-29 season, so there's little reason to anticipate a massive drop-off in 2023. Kansas City also added Charles Omenihu via free agency, and George Karlaftis showed some breakout signs as a pass-rusher late in 2022, so some flanking options should prevent opponents from honing in on stopping Jones. Agrees to historic deal with KC
DTKansas City Chiefs
March 9, 2024
Jones and the Chiefs agreed Saturday on a five-year contract that includes $95 million guaranteed, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a historic deal that gives the veteran the highest average annual salary ever for a defensive tackle. After a 2023 campaign where Jones sat out the first game of the year while still negotiating a contract, the two sides have removed any drama on his status, with the team heading into free agency Wednesday. The 29-year-old was once again dominant this past season, recording 30 tackles, including 10.5 sacks, while also deflecting four passes over 16 regular-season contests. Additionally, he added eight tackles, including 0.5 sacks, two pass deflections and a forced fumble over the Chiefs' four postseason contests on their way to becoming the first back-to-back Super Bowl champions in the NFL since the Patriots of the 2004 season. Jones is now under contract until he's 34 years old, and the 2024 campaign will be his ninth in Kansas City.

Could get extension this offseason
DTKansas City Chiefs
February 28, 2024
Working out an extension with Jones is Kansas City's top offseason priority, according to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report.
ANALYSIS
The Chiefs used the franchise tag on cornerback L'Jarius Sneed on Wednesday but also gave Sneed permission to seek a trade. Kansas City will likely focus on coming to terms on an extension with Jones, then circle back to Sneed after seeing how much cap space the team has left. Jones was an integral part of Kansas City's Super Bowl-winning teams in both of the last two seasons, notching 15.5 sacks in 2022 and 10.5 sacks in 2023.

Few NFL defenders are as feared as Jones, and he could be worth ranking higher in leagues that award heavily for sacks. His tackle production is mediocre, at best, and he tends to play a modest number of snaps — fewer than 700 in three of the last four years — so those limitations usually block him from DL1 consideration. Jones can take over entire games when he's really on, though, and as his 15.5-sack 2018 season shows, he is capable of unique pass-rushing production on a defense that figures to protect many leads.
Jones broke out in 2018 to the tune of 15.5 sacks, 40 tackles (35 solo) and an interception, which he returned for a touchdown. While he was unable to equal those number last year, it was partially due to the big man missing a trio of contests in the middle of the season due to a groin injury. Jones still managed to collect 36 tackles (23 solo) and 9.0 sacks over 13 games. He was given the franchise tag by the Chiefs' front office this offseason before signing a four-year extension with the team in July. The 2016 second-rounder enters 2020 as a top-tier IDP option along the defensive line.
Jones' box scores feature the low-tackle, high-sack totals you'd expect of a 255-pound edge-rushing specialist rather than the 6-6, 310-pound mountain he is. But weird box score or not, Jones is clearly one of the league's top defenders after posting 15.5 sacks last year in his third season. The per-snap sack rate almost has to regress, but he could offset that a bit with more playing time, which he certainly earned after a modest 776 snaps in 2018. Jones can't be counted on for tackles, though, as last year's mark of 40 was in line with his per-snap rates from the prior two years.
Jones broke out in his second season with the Chiefs, amassing 6.5 sacks and 32 tackles (22 solo) while intercepting a pass and forcing four fumbles in 2017. A slightly slimmer version of Jones is expected to serve as the team's starting left end again in 2018.
Jones was selected 37th overall in 2016 and quickly earned his spot on the field. While he didn't start Week 1, the defensive lineman out of Mississippi State moved into the starting lineup following Allen Bailey's calf injury in Week 6 and started the final 11 games of the campaign. Jones turned the opportunity into 28 tackles (17 solo) and two sacks, and the offseason departures of Dontari Poe and Jaye Howard should clear a path to consistent snaps again in 2017.
The Chiefs top pick in the 2016 NFL Draft (second round, sixth overall), Jones may be destined for a substitution role this season due to the team’s depth on the defensive line. With Dontari Poe in the final year of his contract, Jones will likely be groomed to take over Poe’s spot at nose tackle in 2017.
