Ishmael is not expected to be re-signed by the Falcons, D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old has spent all seven of his NFL seasons as a member of the Falcons, initially joining the club as a seventh-round draft choice in 2013. Ishmael contributed primarily on special teams during the latter half of his run in Atlanta, but during 2014 he racked up a career-high 97 tackles, six pass deflections and four interceptions while making 10 starts on defense. This past season he made 14 appearances and started three games, while picking up 44 tackles and one forced fumble. Whatever team elects to sign him will be adding a versatile veteran to the roster, as Ishmael fielded substantial playing time at both safety and linebacker during his time in Atlanta.

Ishmael has proven himself to be a competent starting safety (and occasional linebacker) in the NFL, though with Atlanta's talent at the top of the depth chart he has served primarily as a role player and special teams contributor since being selected in the seventh round of the 2013 draft. During Ishmael's only season with more than five starts (10 starts in 2014), he put up Pro Bowl-caliber numbers with 96 tackles, six pass deflections, four interceptions and a forced fumble. There can be a case made that Ishmael is Atlanta's most valuable defensive back up with his experience in head coach Dan Quinn's scheme, as well as his ability to generate fear in opposing pass catchers with his hyper-physical nature.
After spending four seasons as a defensive back, the team asked Ishmael to transition to a linebacker role, and according to all accounts, he’s doing well adapting to his new role. He won’t start at linebacker, but he’ll certainly see some action when the team opts to roll with its best pass coverage linebackers. He probably won’t match last season’s tackle total (52), as he’ll be more valuable in the real world than in the fantasy world.
Ishmael filled in for the injured William Moore last season and finished with an impressive 98 tackles, but he's back behind Moore on the depth chart as training camp begins. It's possible that he'll be moved to free safety and he could start if he beats out Charles Godfrey, but another 98 tackle season seems unlikely, especially if he's not a regular starter. If he exits camp with a starting role, he'll be on the IDP watch list, but for now it's more of a wait-and-see approach.
Ishmael will provide safety depth, assuming he makes the squad.
Ishmael will provide depth at free safety in 2013.
