Daly, claiming pains, withdrew in the fourth round of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. He was treated by a therapist but no findings were released. Later, the injury was revealed as the continuing rib cage injury Daly suffered in mid-2007 when a fan triggered a camera and Daly flinched in his downswing, fracturing a rib.
OK, looks like it's time to bring out the quarter. It's the first coin flip of the preview. Seriously, can anyone predict what John Daly will do? There's no telling exactly how his year will go, but it's better not to count on Daly. Daly had a great season in 2003, coming in at $2.3 million. If that is the upside, which I think it is, that's only a $600k improvement. The year before he earned $200k. With a low side that low, and a upside only $600k above his price tag, pass on Daly.
After raking in more than $2 million in 2004, we feel Daly will come down to reality just a tad this season. As long as he can manage to keep his magical touch around the green, we don't foresee a huge dropoff in '05.
If he can stay focused, mentally and physically, he could have a decent season. But we've seen Daly let us down before, where he starts the season with a few good showings and then something bad happens. If he can stay away from the bad outside forces, he could start to climb the hill and slowly return to the old John Daly.
