Gone are the days of Flesch winning multiple times on the PGA TOUR. He simply does not have that game anymore. What he does have is a good enough game to maintain his playing privileges each season and possibly a little more.
Flesch still has game, he just doesn't show it as often anymore. More concerning than his the frequency of his game appearing, is the timing of that game. More often that not over the last couple years, he's made most of his money in the fall. Flesch is not a young man, meaning, he's not on his way up the food chain, so good showings in the fall don't mean as much.
Flesch's position on the money list was probably the biggest aberration of the 2007 season. Flesch accomplished nothing, squat, zero for the first seven months of the season, then he won the Reno-Tahoe Open and Turning Stone Resort Championship and he cracked the top-30 by season's end. Flesch is not as bad as he appeared early last season, but he's certainly not a top-30 player right now. Look for more consistency, but less overall production this year.
Flesch will play anytime, anywhere, as evidence by his 33 events last year. The best word to describe Flesch is solid. He's a solid player who shows up more often than not, but recently he's had trouble getting to the top. It seems as though Flesch is in the hunt every week, but he always finds a way to disappear. This hasn't always been a problem. Flesch has won on the PGA Tour a few times, most recently 2004. We know he can win, and we know he's going to play as often as anyone on tour, so the odds just might be in his favor to break through to the winner's circle again in 2007.
Flesch finally broke into the winner's circle in 2003 after years of near misses. The funny thing is it wasn't his best year as a whole ($2,269,630). His year in fact was wildly inconsistent. After breaking through at the HP Classic, it took Flesch another 12 tries to crack the Top 10. That could have been the hang-over from winning finally but it also worries us a bit. The Flesch that we got behind a couple years ago was one that was in the hunt several times a year. We have not seen that from him lately, so he'll probably end up in roughly the same spot on the Money List.
