Once upon a time, Weekley was a pretty consistent player on the PGA Tour, but those days are gone. When Weekly first got some traction on the PGA Tour, in 2007, he was a very reliable guy, but around 2010 he became pretty erratic. Over the past four seasons, Weekley has earned as little as $800k and as much as $2.8 million. Last season was a down season for Weekley, but at this point in his career, his upside is limited, which makes Weekley a poor salary cap selection this year. In draft leagues, he should go near the 10th-round.
It doesn't seem that long ago that Weekley was riding his driver down the first fairway during the Ryder Cup, but it was actually quite a while ago. Weekley will always be fondly remembered for that moment and while he had quite the resurgence in his gold game over the past few years, it does appear that the best is behind him. He's worth a quick look in salary cap leagues, but the upside appears to limited at this point. He should go in the later rounds of a draft league though.
Don't bury him, he's not dead yet. Though many left him for dead after an awful four-year stretch, Weekley rose from the ashes in 2013 and now looks to return to the place where he was just 5-6 years ago when he was riding his driver like a horse down the first fairway during his Ryder Cup match. It's impossible to root against this guy, he's golf's answer to Big Papi -- the loveable big man who's always got a smile on his face, but don't let that persuade you to take him out of position. He had a nice year, but it's only one out of a handful and he regressed once, he could do it again. With that said, you should probably wait on him until somewhere in the 30s. In salary cap leagues he's probably too much of a risk.
It's good to see Weekley back as a member of the PGA TOUR again. He's the kind of character that's lacking in the game these days. Weekley peaked a few years ago when he won multiple times in one season, but it's been a while since we've seen that form. Hopefully, he can find that form again sometime soon, thought that seems unlikely. He may be on his way back, but until we see more, he's probably not worth a venture in salary cap formats. In draft leagues, he's probably worth a late-round pick.
It seems like yesterday that Boo Weekly was riding his driver off the first tee box at the Ryder cup and inspiring his team to a victory. It was actually a few years ago, and Weekley's game has all but disappeared since. Weekley lost his card last year, but he's still got that past-champions exemption sitting in his pocket. If he chooses to use it this year, he'll have plenty of opportunity to improve his 2011 numbers.
Weekley's rise and fall both happened in the blink of an eye. He came out of nowhere in 2007 to capture his first PGA TOUR victory and followed that with another win in 2008. After that, however, his game began to slip. His earnings have decreased three consecutive seasons. Weekley definitely has the talent to succeed on the PGA TOUR, but his drive is in question. From tee to green, Weekley is strong, but once on the green, he struggles mightily.
With two PGA TOUR victories and one Ryder Cup victory under his belt, it appeared the sky was the limit for Weekley. Then came 2009. It's hard to explain what happened to Weekley last year, he simply lost his game. Weekley posted consecutive $2 million seasons in 2007-2008, so we can't classify him as a fluke, but that just makes last year even harder to explain. With the Ryder Cup on the horizon, look for Weekley to return to his pre-2009 form.
Weekley is certainly a streaky player, but he's shown that he definitely will show up a time or two each year. Expect his consistency to improve as he gets older. Weekley withdrew from The Players after hitting a fairway shot at the 11th hole, then quickly grabbing his left shoulder.
Weekley had a solid year and he's probably a third to fourth round player in most draft leagues. Salary cap leagues its a different story. Weekley set the bar pretty high last year and might have a hard time reaching the numbers from last year.
