February 22, 2021
Wi withdrew Monday from this week's Puerto Rico Open, Rob Bolton of PGATour.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wi had been in line to join the Puerto Rico field as an alternate, but he ended up passing on the opportunity for an unspecified reason. The 49-year-old hasn't played in a PGA Tour event since failing to make the cut at the Barracuda Championship last July.

Wi has spent the better part of the past five seasons above the $1 million mark, but at 42, he may be on the back-end of his career. Wi is better than the number he posted last year, but probably not significantly better, which is what you need, to be considered for a salary cap selection. Wi has some value in draft leagues though and should go in the 100-110 range.
Wi has yet to win on the PGA TOUR, but he's come close several times. A couple of those close calls came last season. The first came at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am where he finished runner-up, the second at the Greenbrier Classic where he finished T3. This seems to be typical of Wi. He'll come close a couple times a year and maybe break through once, but he's unlikely to breakout with a huge season. As such, there's no reason to take him in a salary cap format. In draft leagues, wait until the fifth round before considering him.
Here's an interesting note, in four of the last five seasons, Wi has collected exactly one runner-up finish. It's a big reason why he's retained his PGA Tour card over that span, but more consistency is needed if he's to continue to hold onto that card. Sure, he could continue to get a lone runner-up each year, but going that route is quite nerve-racking, especially when that runner-up finish hasn't come yet and the calendar turns to August. Wi is a pretty solid player, but his upside is limited.
Since his rookie season in 2007, Wi has been in the same general earnings range between $1-2 million. While a breakout is possible, it seems more likely he is what he is at this point. He has three runner-up finishes in his career, but none of those three came last season. On the bright side, his scoring average improved to a career best last season. Wi also has been among the best putters on the PGA TOUR the last two seasons.
Wi has established himself as a solid player on the PGA Tour; but after three full seasons, it's safe to say: what you see is what you get. Wi is not likely to have a breakout season in 2010, but on the flip side, he's not likely to go in the tank either.
Wi struggled to find his groove on the PGA Tour, but his most recent run has proven successful. Wi's game has improved over the last couple years and that trend should continue this year.
Charlie Wi has always been able to putt. Even when he failed to keep his card after his first time on the PGA Tour in 2005, he could putt. The difference for Wi last season was his ability to hit greens. He ranked 38th on the tour which lead to an improvement in his overall numbers. A look back at his stats over the last 10 years shows that he is getting better each year. Look for more improvement in 2008.
