Misses FedExCup Playoffs by one spot
August 20, 2018
Piller missed the cut at the Wyndham Championship by one stroke and fell from 124th to 126th in the FedExCup standings, missing the playoffs by one spot as a result.
ANALYSIS
Piller lost just over 1.2 strokes tee-to-green during his first two rounds at Sedgefield CC as ballstriking was his main problem. His top-fives at the CareerBuilder Challenge and OHL Classic earlier in the season ultimately weren't enough to earn a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs, while he also missed 17 cuts this season. He'll be in the field at this week's Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship as he looks to retain his PGA Tour card via the Web.com Tour Finals.

Piller has bounced between the Web.com Tour and PGA Tour each year for the last six seasons, but this season he showed progress in netting $847,304 on the PGA Tour. However, he fell into the unenviable No. 126 spot in the FedExCup standings, one shy of retaining his card automatically. Piller's year was summarized by below average play in all aspects expect his putting, where he was 79th on tour in strokes gained: putting, though he did earn two top-5 finishes, his best a T3 at the CareerBuilder Challenge. Piller's prospects for this season are likely capped given he's in his early thirties and has ricocheted between tours the last six years. It's best to avoid him in salary cap leagues as well as draft leagues.
Piller must feel like a ping pong ball bouncing back and forth from Web.com Tour to PGA Tour on five occassions in his career, successfully earning his PGA Tour card this year through the Web.com Tour Finals. Last year Piller's full-time gig on the Web.com Tour netted him $144,667, so he'll be delighted to have the chance to multiply that on the big boy Tour this season. Piller's salient attribute is definitely his putting, as he was 10th on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Putting back in his last fully exempt year of 2015-16. Piller's prospects for this season are probably similar to 2015-16 with limited upside given he's 31 and has proven very little. He's undraftable in salary cap leagues and should probably be ignored in draft leagues as well.
Piller won twice on the Nationwide Tour last season on his way to an eighth-place finish on the Nationwide Tour money list last season. Pillar started the season well, but faded a little down the stretch. Perhaps he knew his card was wrapped up for the following year. Whatever the case, Pillar should be one of the few in the hunt for rookie of the year at season's end.
