Gaunce will be given a solid shot at making the NHL team this year. At 24, he's had the opportunity to develop his game in the AHL and he's showing a steady hand on the defensive-side of puck. The team is looking to bring up a young defenseman or two, and Gaunce is on the short list. He'll vie for a third-pairing role with the Stars, but may still end up back in the AHL, depending on the final mix on the blue line. His defensive outlook will hinder his fantasy value any way, so avoid him for now.
The scouting report on Gaunce reads something like this: Good size, good strength, but will need to work on his skating to adjust to the NHL. He has a hard slap shot and is a decent skater, though he won’t surprise opponents with his top gear. With his defensive game, what you see is what you get – Gaunce works hard and effectively uses his 6’1”, 203 lbs frame to push opposing forwards away from the goal area. He is tough along the boards and is rarely caught out of position. While he doesn’t do any one thing particularly noteworthy, it’s his well-rounded game that makes him a prospect. He’ll likely spend this season at AHL Lake Erie.
Gaunce is an offensively talented defenseman who can also provide some added grit. He needs another season or two to continue his development, but he is turning into a very capable all-around defender. He tallied 64 points (17G, 47A) in 67 games for the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors of the OHL last season.
Gaunce is an offensively talented d-man who can also provide some added grit. He needs at least another couple of seasons to continue his development, but is turning into a very capable all-around defender.
