Hishon will end his playing career in favor of joining the scouting ranks.
ANALYSIS
Hishon will return to OHL Owen Sound, where spent his four-year junior career in the role of regional scout. After a pair of 80-plus point campaigns with the Attack, the center was selected 17th overall by the Avalanche in the 2010 NHL Draft. Unfortunately, the 26-year-old's transition to the professional ranks didn't exactly pan out and he logged a mere 13 games for Colorado. After two seasons overseas, the Ontario native will return to North America and take on an off-ice role.

Hishon missed most of two seasons due to concussion issues, but he actually saw ice in 2013-14 and finished with 24 points in 50 games at AHL Lake Erie. But even in what was a relatively healthy season, Hishon still missed training camp because of a groin injury, and it's starting to look like he'll spend his entire career with a first-aid kit strapped to him. Hishon’s NHL dream came true in the postseason when he pulled on the Avs' jersey for the first time and skated in three games against Minnesota. There, we got to see the vision, creativity and hands that made him a first-round pick (2010). This season, Hishon has an outside shot at claiming the the fourth-line center job for the Avs, but he'll need to prove he can stay healthy. Avoid him until he establishes himself in the league and moves up the depth chart.
The 19-year-old Hishon, selected 17th overall in last year's NHL draft, finished with 37 goals and 87 points in 50 games for OHL Owen Sound last season, despite missing 17 games due to injury. Hishon was signed to a three-year entry level contract by the Avs in March and is expected to challenge for a roster spot in training camp in September. However, in all likelihood, he will wind up opening the season in AHL Lake Erie. Hishon projects as a top-six forward someday, but is still a season or two away from making the jump to the NHL.
The Avalanche surprised the hockey world by taking Hishon in the first round of the 2010 draft - 17th overall - well above his NHL Central Scouting Service ranking of 55th. Despite this massive vote of confidence by the organization, Hishon is not expected to play in Denver this coming season. He still has another year of junior eligibility left with Owen Sound of the OHL, and probably needs to get considerably stronger to be considered NHL-ready.
