Expected to be recalled Friday
DColorado Avalanche  Minors
December 9, 2022
Hunt is expected to be recalled from AHL Colorado on Friday, Peter Baugh of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Hunt will be the Avalanche's sixth defenseman as Bowen Byram, Kurtis MacDermid and Josh Manson are all out of action with lower-body injuries, while Jacob MacDonald is expected to move up to the fourth forward line. Hunt has six goals and 20 points in 22 games with AHL Colorado. He has seen action in 241 NHL games in his career.

2014
Hunt enjoyed a career year in 2019-20, notching eight goals, 19 points and 106 shots on goal in 59 contests. At even strength, Hunt is nothing more than a third-pairing defenseman, but he's usually given plenty of chances to contribute on the power play. He averaged 2:16 per game with the man advantage last year, but he'll have to compete for power-play time with Jared Spurgeon, Ryan Suter and Matt Dumba this season. Never a physical player, Hunt's fantasy value almost solely rests on his power-play production. The safe bet is he doesn't approach another 20-point campaign in 2020-21, which will limit his usefulness to only the deepest of fantasy formats.
Hunt split time between Minnesota and Vegas last season, managing to put up a respectable 12 points in 42 total games. The 30-year-old found himself scratched a majority of the time in Vegas, but was given a solid opportunity once he found a new home with the Wild. Hunt was recently given a two-year, one-way deal by the Wild this offseason, which suggests the team values him. However, he's not likely to see much premium ice time this upcoming season with fellow defenseman Mathew Dumba expected back following a lengthy injury absence.
After splitting time between the Oilers, Predators and Blues, Hunt was selected by Vegas in the expansion draft. The 29-year-old managed 18 points in 45 regular-season games but was scratched during the team's lengthy playoff run. With only 78 career NHL games under his belt and the fact he's approaching his age-30 season, Hunt doesn't offer much fantasy value in the majority of settings. However, he has a decent shot and racked up 12 power-play points in 2017-18, so if he does get into the lineup, Hunt could be worth scooping up in some deeper leagues.
Hunt managed a surprising six points in 12 games between the Predators and Blues last year, but his three points in 21 previous NHL appearances suggest he has almost no chance of matching that pace over an extended period. Vegas is deep enough on the blue line that Hunt will probably spend most of his time in either the AHL or the press box, so there’s little reason to expect the undersized 28-year-old to contribute much.
Hunt's size (5-9, 188 lbs) may never allow him to be a full-time blue liner, but rather a depth defenseman who can answer the call when needed for a few games here and there. The Oilers are certainly weak on defense, so he could get another cup of coffee with the team this season. But he'll need to prove he's more than a pint-sized, power-play quarterback from the AHL.
