Dodson was released by the UFC on Friday, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Dodson is coming off a loss to Merab Dvashili via unanimous decision at UFC 252 in August, but his release from the promotion is still surprising. The 35-year-old signed a five-fight contract with the promotion in June but will now seek other opportunities going forward. Dodson was once one of the best flyweights in the world, but he's been less effective since moving to the bantamweight division. He'll engage in discussions with multiple promotions before determining his next destination.

Dodson lost to Merab Dvalishvili via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC 252 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Dodson did a reasonably good job of stopping Dvalishvili's takedown attempts and was still run out of the building. Facing an opponent who appeared to be twice his size, Dodson had no answers for the constant pressure of Dvalishvili. He did manage to land a couple counter strikes here and there, but for the most part, Dodson's offense was one-and-done. Dodson was one of the best flyweights in the world for years, but his power-punching style is less effective at 135 pounds. Dodson has enough natural ability to remain competitive at bantamweight, but it's not realistic to expect him to compete against the best the division has to offer. Dodson will be turning 36 years old in late September.

Dodson (21-11-0) is scheduled to face Merab Dvalishvili (11-4-0) in a bantamweight fight Aug. 15 at UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nolan King, Farah Hannoun and John Morgan of USA Today report.

Dodson let Wood get the best of him through the first two frames, with Wood winning the striking battle in each and even recording a takedown in the first round. The second round was more of the same, but Dodson was rightfully upset after Wood landed multiple low blows within close vicinity of each other. Wood was deducted a point and the two finished the second frame swinging. That point ultimately didn't matter, as Dodson was able to land a heavy counter left early in the third that began the fight-ended sequence. Dodson proceeded to charge The Prospect across the cage and eventually got him down, and Wood was in cover-up mode from there. Dodson entered this matchup as a (+140) underdog, but showed here that experience is greater than hype.
