Nearly pulls off the upset over Gegard Mousasi at Bellator 185
Shlemenko lost to Gegard Mousasi via unanimous decision (28-29, 28-29, 28-29) at Bellator 185 on Friday in Uncasville, Conn.
ANALYSIS
Shlemenko came extremely close to picking up the biggest win of his career. In the first round, he caught Mousasi with a hard shot that closed one of his eyes. In terms of striking, Shlemenko had the advantage for the rest of the fight. Unfortunately for him, Mousasi is still a plus grappler. The former Strikeforce champion was able to win the first and second rounds, at least in the eye's of the judges, with his grappling and thus take the decision. The second round was very close. Shlemenko landed some very hard strikes, but he spent the last two minutes in back mount. The third round was all Shlemenko. The former Bellator champion landed with both punches and kicks. Mousasi appeared to be on ice skates on multiple occasions, but he survived and finished the fight. The Bellator middleweight division is surprisingly shallow, so there is a good chance that Shlemenko will get a shot at a rematch with Mousasi in the near future.
