Volkov (29-7-0) withdrew Wednesday from his scheduled heavyweight fight April 20 in Saint Petersburg against Alistair Overeem (44-17-0, 1NC), Ariel Helwani of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The report doesn't specify Volkov's reason for pulling out of the fight, but he's presumably dealing with an injury. Volkov most recently fought in Las Vegas back in October, when he suffered a late knockout loss to Derrick Lewis. In place of Volkov, the UFC added Aleksei Oleinik (57-11-1) to the card for the Saint Petersburg event.

To take on Alistair Overeem
HeavyweightUFC
Out
February 22, 2019
Volkov has been booked to fight Alistair Overeem in the main event of a UFC event in Russia on April 20, Jose Youngs of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Volkov is a former Bellator champion that is 30-7 overall in his MMA career and is off to an impressive start in the UFC, boasting a 4-1 record through his first five outings. He is, however, coming off a knockout loss at the hands of Derrick Lewis at UFC 229 back in October. It was certainly a tough loss for Volkov to swallow, as he was seconds away from a victory via decision before getting KO'd.
Suffers crushing late KO loss at hands of Derrick Lewis Saturday
HeavyweightUFC

October 6, 2018
Volkov lost to Derrick Lewis via KO (punches) at 4:49 of Round 3 at UFC 229 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
This loss is going to keep Volkov up for months, if not years. Less than 30 seconds away from a guaranteed decision victory, Volkov allowed Lewis to connect with one of his trademark right hands and he was unable to recover from the damage despite being given ample opportunity from referee Herb Dean. Volkov dominated the entire fight and could have knocked out Lewis on at least a half dozen occasions if it wasn't for Lewis's next-level toughness. Volkvo went from being on the verge of a title shot to the back of the pack in a split second.
To face Derrick Lewis in October
HeavyweightUFC

August 13, 2018
Volkov will face off against Derrick Lewis on Oct. 6 at UFC 229 in the co-main event, Shaun Al-Shatti of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Volkov has won his past four bouts, including a victory over Fabricio Werdum via KO (punches) in London in March. "Drago" boasts a 29-6 career record and will step into the arena against Lewis, who is 8-1 in his last nine outings. During Lewis's latest fight, he defeated the highly-touted Francis Ngannou at UFC 226 in July, though his performance was certainly nothing to write home about. Volkov is a younger fighter with more momentum, who opened as approximately a (-185) betting favorite.
Wins with devastating KO in Round 4 against Werdum
HeavyweightUFC
Out
March 17, 2018
Volkov defeated Fabricio Werdum via KO (punches) at 1:38 of Round 4 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in London.
ANALYSIS
Volkov showed great takedown defense and a great guard in this fight. He got taken down immediately in the first round, but "Drago" would not let Werdum pass his guard. Once he got back to his feet, Volkov was able to land a nice uppercut that snapped back Werdum's head, but was taken down again. In the second, Werdum kept trying to take the Russian down, but Volkov showed great defense for the first half of the round. Werdum eventually landed a takedown, but once again could not pass Volkov's guard. However, he did open a cut on the former Bellator champion's forehead. In Round 3 Volkov opened up a big cut with a punch. That was the beginning of the end as his eye was almost swollen shut. Werdum had no answers for Volkov's striking and could not take him down. In the fourth Volkov started to land big punches and eventually knocked Werdum down. He followed it up with a huge punch that knocked Werdum out cold. This was a huge win for Volkov and will put him close to a title shot.

Volkov will face off against Fabricio Werdum at UFC FIght Night 127 on March 17 in London.
ANALYSIS
Volkov will head back into the Octagon for the first time since beating Stefan Struve via TKO (punches) during the main event of UFC Fight Night 115 in Rotterdam in September. This victory marked a third win in as many chances during Volkov's UFC career, and boosted his career record to 29-6 as a professional. On the other hand, Werdum comes in with a winning streak of his own, topping Walt Harris and Marcin Tybura in the latter stages of 2017, improving his record within the promotion to 9-2. This heavyweight bout will headline the London event.
