Digs deep to earn draw in Brazil
Barzola and Rani Yahya fought to a majority draw (29-28, 28-28, 28-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Brasilia, Brazil.
ANALYSIS
Barzola likely would have been furious with a draw when the bout began, but after 10 minutes he should count his lucky stars he was able to emerge with such a result. After a back-and-forth first two rounds which Yahya was getting the better of, Barzola completely took over in Round 3. He landed a remarkable 85 total strikes in the final frame, compared to just three from Yahya. By comparison, the strikes over the course of the first two rounds were 63-55 in Barzola's favor and he was still losing the fight. Barzola deserves credit for digging deep when he simply could have packed his bags and went home with the "L", while Yahya deserves to be heavily criticized for giving away a fight which he had in the bag. Barzola is 2-2-1 in his past five fights.

On top of that, he landed only one of his five takedown attempts. Instead Evloev was the one coming forward and landed four takedowns. Barzola will need to find a way to refine his wrestling and striking attacks. Against higher level fighters, he will need to add defensive to match his offensive volume.

Barzola really had to work for this one. Moffett turned out to be a game opponent and actually outlanded Barzola 90 to 83 on significant strikes. However, Barzola always appeared to be the one pressing the action. He also scored three takedowns. Barzola never really did anything with any of the takedowns, but in a fight that was as close as this one, it is hard to say that those takedowns did not have an effect on the judges. Barzola may never fight for a UFC title, but he will certainly be at the front of the UFC's efforts to expand into South America.
