Wilson Reis

Brazil

Let go by UFC
FlyweightOther
May 26, 2019
Reis has been released by the UFC, Raphael Marinho of Combate reports.
ANALYSIS
Reis is part of a men's flyweight division on the verge of extinction, and the fact he's gone 1-4 in his last five bouts gave the UFC a good enough reason to officially part ways. It's a tough break for the 34-year-old former title challenger, who will finish his UFC run with a 7-6 overall record. Should the Brazilian elect to continue his fighting career, he should have several opportunities waiting for him overseas. The only obstacle at this time is a foot injury suffered in his April 13 TKO loss to Alexandre Pantoja, which resulted in a 180-day medical suspension.

Long suspension due to foot injury
FlyweightOther
April 16, 2019
Reis has been suspended 180 days by the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission pending a physician's clearance of a left foot injury, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
A popular underdog pick, Reis didn't manage to last too long against the younger Pantoja. While he was credited with a takedown, Reis lost the striking battle 23 to one en route to his eventual finish. Reis is an above-average fighter, but the fact that he's lost four of his last five, coupled with the uncertainty surrounding the UFC's 125-pound division, seems to put his future with the promotion in jeopardy.
Knocked out by Alexandre Pantoja
FlyweightOther
April 13, 2019
Reis lost to Alexandre Pantoja via TKO (punches) at 2:58 of Round 1 at UFC 236 on Saturday in Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
With the UFC's 125-pound division seemingly on life support, this was a fight Reis had to have, and he didn't get it. He looked strong in the early portion of the fight before a straight shot right down the pipe from Pantoja closed the show. Reis is one of the better flyweights on the planet, but he now sporting a 1-4 record in his last five bouts dating back to his April 2017 loss to former UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson. Reis, who has no power in his hands, would be of little interest at bantamweight.
Fighting Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 236

February 20, 2019
Reis has been added to UFC 236 on April 13 against Alexandre Pantoja in the flyweight division, Guilherme Gruz of MMAfighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's set to be a competitive battle between the two fighters as Reis is set to enter the Octagon ranked fifth while Pantoja only sits one behind him at sixth. Reis will enter the fight on a bit of a roller coaster over his last four fights, recently ended a three-bout skid in December when he beat Ben Nguyen via unanimous decision to bring his Octagon record up to 7-5.
Easily decisions Ben Nguyen in Adelaide
FlyweightOther
December 1, 2018
Reis defeated Ben Nguyen via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Adelaide, Australia.
ANALYSIS
Reis played to his biggest strength and repeatedly shot for takedowns against the undersized Nguyen. He ended up scoring on seven-of-seventeen attempts and as a result was able to keep Nguyen trapped against the cage and the mat for a good portion of the fight. It was an easy win in a fight in which Reis was shockingly the underdog at +125. The Brazilian better hope that the UFC doesn't do away with the flyweight division. Reis has little power in his hands (he doesn't have a single win in his career via knockout) and he's short at 5-foot-4. He would be far less interesting at 135 pounds.
Suffers third straight loss Saturday in Glendale
FlyweightOther
April 14, 2018
Reis lost to John Moraga via unanimous decision (28-29, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC on FOX 29 on Saturday in Glendale, Arizona.
ANALYSIS
In a close fight, Reis should have known that going to the judge's scorecards against Moraga in his hometown was a bad idea. He landed two takedowns in each round, but he did little with his positional advantage outside of one legitimate submission attempt in Round 2. Reis has the brute strength and athleticism to win fights even when he isn't at his best. He nearly pulled off the feat on Saturday, but Moraga's quick start prevented it. Reis is now riding a three-fight losing streak, although the first two setbacks came against UFC Featherweight Champion Demetrious Johnson and perennial top contender Henry Cejudo. Reis needs to get back in the win column his next time out.
