The Armband: Gameweek 31 Captaincy Analysis

This article is part of our The Armband series.

Last gameweek was hit-or-miss with only 10 clubs in action. If you didn't strike it rich with Harry Kane or Graziano Pelle, your captain was more than likely a dud.

Luckily, there will be more choices in Gameweek 31 with the usual full slate of matches.

The first place to start is where we left off last week with Kane. Spurs remain in a fight with Leicester for the top of the table and are home to Bournemouth. Kane got off to a rough start to the 2015/16 campaign, but after his brace last weekend, he is tied with Jamie Vardy for the league lead with 19 goals.

Kane found his form in late December and hasn't let it go since. The striker has scored 11 goals in the last 14 matches.
Bournemouth have been stout defensively at times this season, but still have allowed 24 goals on the road, fifth-most in the league. Tottenham have taken 10 points from their last four home matches and should add three more after this one.

Sergio Aguero will be a popular option as usual, despite not finding the net at Norwich last weekend. Aguero plays his best at the Etihad, though, and has five goals in his last four matches there. That being said, scoring may be tough to come by against David de Gea and the defensive-minded Manchester United.

A sneaky captain play could end up being Swansea's Gylfi Sigurdsson, who has scored in two straight matches. The midfielder hasn't reached his assist numbers from last year with only two, but he already has a career-best nine goals.

The Swans are home to bottom-feeders Aston Villa. Villa have been brutal in recent games, allowing 17 goals in the past five and six goals in their last two away from home. Swansea aren't a high-scoring club, but they should send a couple home against Villa.

None of the top forwards this weekend have exciting matchups, with Romelu Lukaku home to Arsenal and Jamie Vardy traveling to Crystal Palace.

A couple teams with favorable matchups include Newcastle (vs. Sunderland) and West Brom (vs. Norwich). Unfortunately, there isn't anyone truly trustworthy on either squad. Georginio Wijnaldum deserves a look solely based on what he's done this year with nine goals and four assists. However, Wijnaldum hasn't scored or assisted since Jan. 16.

A striker in form and with a good matchup is Salomon Rondon, who has scored in four of his last six matches for the Baggies. Norwich have allowed 32 goals in 15 road games this year, so backing Rondon wouldn't be a terrible idea.

Liverpool don't have a terribly favorable matchup at Southampton (16 goals allowed in 15 matches), but when a player is in form, you have to take notice. Roberto Firmino has led the Liverpool charge with seven goals and four assists in their last eight league matches.

Gameweek 31 Captaincy Rankings

1. Harry Kane, Tottenham
2. Gylfi Sigurdsson, Swansea
3. Sergio Aguero, Manchester City
4. Salomon Rondon, West Brom
5. Roberto Firmino, Liverpool
