The Armband: FPL Gameweek 22 Captain Rankings

This article is part of our The Armband series.

It was only a matter of time before we had a weird week due to the influx of matches, and that's what we got in Gameweek 21. The average points ended up at 31, which was lower than my projected 40. Man City and Man United were held scoreless, while Arsenal only scored once and Mohamed Salah tallied twice for Liverpool. Chelsea didn't lose form, but that didn't include Eden Hazard or Alvaro Morata, as Willian was the player of the match.

Deciding a captain should be easy for Gameweek 22 unless you despise Tottenham. Spurs have a double gameweek with favorable matches against Swansea and West Ham, and that means most fantasy owners will be looking to Harry Kane. The forward should be well rested coming off a hat trick, though there's a small concern about an illness. Christian Eriksen has to be on the list as well with two matches and he's looked a bit better in recent performances with two goals and three assists in his last six starts. Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min should be set to start both matches, with Son being a slightly better play. Son has scored in five of his last seven starts, while Alli has four league goals all season. Clean sheets are also a good possibility, but picking a defender who will start both matches won't be easy. Jan Vertonghen should start both, but his upside isn't close to that of Kieran Trippier or Ben Davies.

West Ham have an easier second match at home against West Brom. The only two Hammers to trust for the armband have to be Marko Arnautovic and Manuel Lanzini. Arnautovic is the better play with five goals in his last five starts, while Lanzini doesn't really score, putting two shots on goal in the same time period.

In terms of captains, those are the best options by far, but for anyone who hates both Spurs and West Ham, there are other choices.

Man City have a nice rebound match at home against Watford. Outside of City, no other club stands out, with Liverpool at Burnley, Man United at Everton and Arsenal hosting Chelsea. Unfortunately for the Sky Blues, Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus are out. The absence of De Bruyne could be a problem for the attack and will be harder to trust in the first full match without the Belgian. The only two worth a look for the armband are Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling. Based on form, Sterling is the better play, but it's a wonder if Aguero will be more motivated with no worries of Jesus stealing playing time. Watford have only allowed four goals in their last three away matches, but they gave up four at home to Huddersfield only a couple weeks ago. Even with De Bruyne out, four or five goals wouldn't be a surprise for City.
