2024 Fantasy Outlook
Jimenez secured a save in Oakland's season opener, but that was the only one he'd tally during the 2023 campaign. The 30-year-old missed nearly four months of action with a right shoulder strain; the same injury that forced him to miss a significant chunk of the 2022 season. As a result, Jimenez was limited to just 23.1 innings across 25 appearances. When healthy, Jimenez's slider is extremely effective, but he also has trouble finding the strike zone. He has a 14.2 percent walk rate for his career and a below-average strikeout rate, which doesn't fit the typical closer profile. However, Jimenez has demonstrated upside in the past, including 15 scoreless outings over his last 17 appearances to close out last season. Oakland has afforded him with high-leverage opportunities when healthy, but his persistent shoulder issues dim his prospects for 2024. Read Past Outlooks

Effective since demotion
Jimenez, who was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday, fired two perfect innings with four strikeouts over his first two relief appearances with the Aviators on Friday and Sunday. He also recorded a save in the latter outing.
ANALYSIS
It's a small sample, but the decision to demote Jimenez after a couple of uneven outings earlier in May appears to have been a prudent one. The right-hander has breezed through his first pair of minor-league appearances, and if he continues on a similar track, Jimenez could soon find himself back on the big-league roster.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Playing catch
Jimenez played catch Monday for the first time since going on the injured list, reports Martin Gallegos of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Jimenez is in the early stages of a throwing program after straining his right shoulder in mid-June. It would appear that he's still a couple of weeks away from a return as he'll likely need to progress through throwing bullpens, facing live hitters and, possibly, a rehab assignment. A return before the All-Star break may be possible but a fair amount of progress needs to be made between now and then for that to happen.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2020
After three consecutive years being selected in the Rule 5 draft, only to be returned to his original club each time, Jimenez signed a minor league deal with Oakland prior to 2022. The 28-year-old had a strong spring, made the Athletics' Opening Day roster, and immediately made a high-leverage impact, securing his first career save in just his third big league appearance. The rookie did not allow an earned run over his first 13 outings and quickly supplanted Lou Trivino as Oakland's primary closer. Jimenez notched a team-high 11 saves to go along with a respectable 3.41 ERA and 1.19 WHIP, but his command was erratic, which led to a 12.3% walk rate. He also missed 86 days between two IL stints with a strained right shoulder that ultimately did not require surgery. Jimenez is optimistic he'll be ready for spring training, but given his uncertain health and lack of MLB experience, he's not a safe bet to regain the closer role.
