Training Camp Notes: Aug. 28

This article is part of our Training Camp Notes series.

It wasn't a huge news day as teams wrap up their preseason schedule before turning their focus to Week 1 matchups. Even so, there were relevant news items, including a big injury that will impact the landscape of the early rounds of drafts.

  • J.K. Dobbins suffered an apparent knee injury in the final Ravens' preseason game against Washington. He was taken off the field, examined momentarily in the medical tent and then carted off the field. There's been no official word on the injury, but the safest course of action is to assume that Dobbins will miss a minimum of the first few games of the season. Gus Edwards would be the obvious beneficiary of Dobbins' misfortune, though it's worth keeping in mind the Ravens utilize multiple backs and also project to have one of the highest rushing volume offenses in the league. If Dobbins' absence is lengthy, Justice Hill could also enter the picture as a viable running back to roster. Unfortunately, Hill has also been sidelined for several weeks, and if both Hill and Dobbins remain out for Week 1 against the Raiders, Edwards should be in a great position to produce.
  • Sammy Watkins did not participate in Saturday's preseason game for the Ravens. He has been sidelined since Aug. 16 with an undisclosed injury. The team said the injury isn't serious, though his ongoing absence says otherwise. With Rashod Bateman and Dobbins likely to also remain sidelined for the opening game of the regular season, Baltimore could have a depleted skills group.
  • There was better news in Dallas. As expected, Dak Prescott participated in the team's final preseason game. The results aren't all that important, though he completed three of his five pass attempts for 25 yards. Prescott should be ready to go for Week 1 against Tampa Bay.
  • There was also good news out of Buffalo. Aside from Josh Allen torching the Green Bay second-string defense, Gabriel Davis, Cole Beasley and Emmanuel Sanders returned from  injuries and were active in the game. Stefon Diggs remained sidelined, but participated in warmups. Expect the entire wide receiver corps to be ready for game action in Week 1 against Pittsburgh.
  • Sam Ehlinger suffered a knee sprain and will be sidelined five to six weeks. That sets up Jacob Eason to start should Carson Wentz not return for a Week 1 matchup against the Seahawks. However, while there hasn't been official news, Adam Schefter has suggested that Wentz will be on the field to start the regular season.

Now to a few roster moves.

  • Gardner Minshew was traded from the Jaguars to the Eagles early Saturday morning. Minshew isn't likely to challenge Jalen Hurts for the starting job, though he also offers a better alternative to Joe Flacco should Hurts struggle.
  • Ryan Santoso beat out Joey Slye for the Panthers' starting kicker job. It's not huge fantasy news, but would also be frustrating to draft a kicker no longer with a job.
  • The Deshaun Watson saga continued, with Miami reportedly his most likely destination. He's now been linked to several teams, though the Dolphins seemingly keep popping up. The situation doesn't appear close to a resolution but remains worth keeping in mind.
