Getzlaf will retire from the CFL on Thursday.

Getzlaf will call it a career after playing 11 years in the CFL, including eight-and-a-half with his hometown Roughriders. The veteran slotback recently signed with Saskatchewan's practice team in October after being let go by Edmonton following eight games with the team in 2017. Over the course of his career, Getzlaf recorded 6,192 receiving yards and 41 scores, including a high of 10 touchdowns in 2011.

Getzlaf was moved to the Eskimos' practice roster Thursday, Dave Campbell of 630 CHED reports.

The move for Getzlaf to the practice squad likely is a result of the signing of Jamill Smith this week, as Smith was immediately listed as a reserve slotback for the Eskimos. The 34-year-old was playing a minimal role with Edmonton, as the veteran's usage is continuing to decline.

Getzlaf signed a deal with the Eskimos on Friday.

After initially being released into the wilds of free agency, Getzlaf was finally able to come to an agreement with Edmonton, the team he played with in 2016 after eight seasons in Saskatchewan. The 34-year-old finished the last campaign with 41 receptions for 455 yards and two touchdowns in 18 games, signaling that his numbers may continue to dwindle as the years roll on.

Getzlaf totaled 61 yards on four receptions in Saturday's 23-20 loss to the Redblacks. He also hauled in a two-point conversion pass.

The veteran national had a season-high four catches, and actually surpassed Derel Walker on the night in both receptions and yardage. Getzlaf's outing was certainly encouraging but likely an outlier, as Walker and Adarius Bowman typically spearhead the Eskimos' air attack. The 33-year-old has totaled 229 yards and a touchdown on 17 receptions over the first six games of the season.

Getzlaf totaled 52 yards on three receptions in Thursday's 30-23 loss to the Blue Bombers.

The 33-year-old national posted his season high in yardage while once again serving in a strict complementary role to Derel Walker and Adarius Bowman. On this night, however, Getzlaf actually equaled the latter's reception total, an extremely rare occurrence given the usual disparity in targets between the two. The veteran receiver figures to continue providing this type of production in his role as a safety valve in the short-to-intermediate passing game for quarterback Mike Reilly.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Getzlaf caught three passes for 32 yards and a touchdown in Friday's win over the Roughriders.

The score was his first of the year but so far through two games Getzlaf hasn't seen much action, catching just five passes for 62 yards. The 33-year-old saw declining numbers each of the last two seasons with Saskatchewan, and it doesn't look like the move to Edmonton will spark his production.
