RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Gillanders agreed to a two-year contract extension with Ottawa on Monday, CFL.ca reports.

The 27-year-old will be back with the Redblacks for another two seasons after posting career-best rushing numbers in 2017 (21 carries for 133 yards). Gillanders could be in line for an expanded role next season, though that will likely depend on Ottawa's remaining offseason moves (fellow running backs William Powell and Mossis Madu are pending free agents).

Gillanders will serve as the backup running back in Thursday's game against the Eskimos.

Gillanders ran the ball six times last week in place of an injured William Powell (hamstring) and is averaging 6.3 yards on 18 carries this season, but he is primarily a fullback, so he will be counted on mainly as depth behind Mossis Madu this week with Powell out.

Gillanders is listed as a reserve fullback on the depth chart for Monday's game against the Argonauts.

Gillanders unexpectedly played a key role running the ball for the Redblacks in Week 1, but he has not taken a carry since, and he will move back to his natural fullback position this week with top running back William Powell healthy and fellow fullback Anthony Gosselin (undisclosed) out.

Gillanders carried the ball 12 times for 80 yards in Friday's 31-31 tie with the Stampeders.

William Powell, listed at the top of Ottawa's depth chart at RB heading into the game, saw just six carries but did catch a short TD pass, so Redblacks head coach Rick Campbell may simply have been playing the hot hand in his backfield in Week 1. Gillanders came into 2017 with just 34 career rushing yards in 40 games over the last three years, so this may well end up being the high point of his season.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Gillanders is listed on the depth chart for Friday's tilt with the Alouettes, Gord Holder of the Ottawa Citizen reports.

Gillanders has been battling a knee injury all season but now appears to be ready to take the field if his number is called. He is listed as a second-string fullback, so he may not even get an opportunity to play Friday, but a return to the depth chart is a positive step forward.
