2019 Fantasy Outlook
The Vikings surprised some by nabbing Mattison, a projected Day 3 pick, late in the third round of the 2019 draft. It isn't too hard to see what caught the team's attention, especially considering the trouble Dalvin Cook has had staying healthy. Mattison was a workhorse at Boise State, and his three-down skill set and stout frame (5-11, 221) should allow him to step straight into a starting role if necessary. He doesn't have plus speed or elusiveness and might not be a big-play threat, but he attacks holes with power, burst and balance, and he gets to the second level consistently even if he doesn't do a lot of damage once there. Even if Cook stays healthy, Minnesota could elect to use Mattison in short-yardage spots and at the goal line, and a lack of competition on the depth chart - Mike Boone, Ameer Abdullah and Roc Thomas are the other reserve running backs - points toward some carries for the rookie. But considering Cook's propensity for injury, Mattison should be on the fantasy radar. Read Past Outlooks

Minnesota takes in third round
RBMinnesota Vikings
April 26, 2019
The Vikings selected Mattison in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, 102nd overall.
Mattison (5-foot-11, 221 pounds) is a well-built running back who served as a workhorse for Boise State the last two years, totaling 2,501 yards (4.9 YPC) and 29 touchdowns over that span while adding 55 catches for 457 yards and a touchdown. His rushing production was voluminous but not as explosive as the usual Boise State standard -- a player like Jeremy McNichols was far more effective, for instance -- and Mattison lacks speed overall (4.67-second 40). However, he's at least quite strong and offers some short-area burst (127-inch broad jump), so he could provide useful snaps when the Vikings want to keep Dalvin Cook out of harm's way. Assuming the Minnesota running back depth chart remains unchanged moving forward, Mattison is probably the favorite to serve as Cook's backup in 2019, though Mike Boone should not be counted out for the time being.
