Moving toward long-term deal
The Panthers and Montour, who is recovering from a shoulder injury, are believed to be moving toward a long-term extension, according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period.
ANALYSIS
Montour hasn't played yet in 2023-24 because of his shoulder issue, but he excelled last season, scoring 16 goals and 73 points in 80 contests while also recording 107 PIM, 92 hits and 93 blocks. The 29-year-old defenseman is due a big raise compared to his current $3.5 million cap hit, and Pagnotta believes Florida is willing to accommodate that with a contract worth around $7 million annually. If the two sides don't agree to terms, then Montour can test the unrestricted free agent market this summer.

Not surprisingly, the move from Buffalo to Florida suited Montour well. In his first full season with the Panthers, Montour finished with career-best marks in both goals (11) and points (37). He added eight points with the man advantage, although his average ice time dipped by more than two and a half minutes to 17:54 per game. Montour's hit and blocked-shot totals are mediocre for a defenseman and he's not going to see time on Florida's No. 1 power-play unit as long as Aaron Ekblad is around, so what we saw from Montour a season ago may very well be his ceiling from a fantasy perspective
